I've always had issues starting a conversation with a stranger, but lately, I have found a new way and it has worked everytime... (although sometimes the conversation doesn't last long)
The one requirement is the person must be doing something on their phone...
Then ask them: "What pokemon they are catching?" or "How is the pokemon catching going?" or "Catch any rare pokemon?"
Usually that receives a chuckle and/or a smile and a verbal response that can be followed up on. Not one of them have actually been catching pokemon, but it breaks the ice and has led to further conversations.
(None of these conversations have led to a friendship or anything beyond the one time conversation; however, it has gotten me to start talking to complete strangers, which normally would take at least 3 beers and much internal debate and agonizing to do.)
