I've seen original Sumerian cuneiform tablets in museums and I was shocked at how small they were and especially how tiny the figures were. I could barely make out the little strokes in clay. How did they read those?

I still have the Epic of Gilgamesh on my reading list, a Mesopotamian poem from roughly the same time.
