I love film, and they are a great way of escapism..so to help others find something to relate to (you may relate with certain characters in the film) and forget the world i will give you in my opinion some films to do with loneliness..

Any additions are welcome and encouraged! Remember film is what you make of it so there are no right or wrong answers..some people may not agree with some suggestions so bare with me.

If you want me to explain the variable themes of loneliness in each film, feel free to PM or start a discussion..

Films:

Taxi driver
Garage
One hour photo
Chungking express
How to be
Lost in translation
Wild Strawberries
Midnight Cowboy
The long day closes
Samson and Delilah
L'avventura (Great ending)
The Wrestler
Last Chance Harvey
Winters Light
The Silence

Sorry if this post is a repeat, if it is then i hope i've mentioned some films that you havent seen before, so you can give them a watch and draw your conclusions.

Thanks..

P.s

Can anybody suggest to me, some books or music (blues, vocal, jazz) exploring the themes of loneliness.

Hey, intriguing list with some I definately have not seen as yet.
The only book I could suggest to yourself follows the theme of the forum: Party of One - The Loners' Manifesto, by Anneli Rufus.
I have only managed to read the foreword and intro on google books but it sounds as though she has "real" first hand experience.

Hope this is of use to you and please keep the film lists coming if you can, helps to break the day up!!!!

All the best

Great list. All of my favourites are there. I can add Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" and Scorsese's "Bringing out the Dead".
There are a lot of great books about loneliness. Dostoevsky, Sartre, Kafka, Bukowski, Maugham, Hemingway wrote about loneliness. Especially Maugham and Sartre.

I LIVE FOR MOVIES! :D

I am deathly serious!

- To me, the locations are places for me to be!
- To me, the characters are folk to get among, and spend time with!
- To me, the predicaments are challenges for me to deal with!

Those on the screen I consider to be my pseudofriends! ;)

One movie, every night, or I'd not remain sane. I swear it.

Between VHS and DVD, I have about 650 titles. Everything from St Trinian's 1 and 2 (remakes), all the way to the darker side of movies, such as "Train", "Hostel" and "The Exorcist" (not that I usually have friends who can turn their heads around on their necks, a full 360 degrees - while not drunk!)

Movies are like visual poetry or visual prose, if you prefer...watch them and you're in company, elsewhere, at least doing something with those others involved. Along comes excitement, change of scenery, variation in life's timetables and offerings, and, of course, love of really great looking girls - what can I say?...I'm a rabidly heterosexual guy and they are a great added feature, in films, to me.

I still see a yellow guy using a big club to batter Hell out of another little yellow guy on the left, there...hasn't the little yellow victim's sentence run its time, yet?

Hmm i have a friend like that. He's going through depression and watch movies all day and all night long. But the thing is, his life remain unchanged but he loves it because he can escape all the troubles in his life and forget about what really matters. Yes. What really matters.

Wow! All day and all night! Nope...that's not healthy! It robs us of our firm footing in reality and removes us from the arena of interaction with people and situations outside the TV screen.

No...I couldn't do that. It's all I can do to watch more than one per day during the Yule, MidSummer and Hallowe'en special periods.

So, when I, myself, said that I live for movies, I was really referring to the intensity of how I feel about them, and about collecting them. I'd be very worried about a friend who spent such a long time watching movies...I really would. The same thing can be said of gaming, I suppose.

I find the right film is just what I need sometimes to overcome an emotional spell.

watched a couple of classic Jamaican films that struck a chord with me recently, The Harder They Come and Countryman. The latter was rather inspirational, for a somewhat mindless action film.

Lonesome Crow...

I've read every word you typed and I still don't know what you've said.

You are to be commended, however, because you appear to be inventing new version of the English language, single-handedly. That's an amazing achievement and one that we should applaud, without reserve.

You could help us a lot, here. Slow your typing down and you'll discover your brain catching up with it. I mean that in the friendliest of manners.

You probably have an endless source of comforting and helpful wisdom within you, but we'll never actually feel the benefits of it because we're reading you with our old English minds, and don't understand the new version.

Can you help us in this?

Fight Club

As you can see, ladies and gents, even the retarded can be "sex gods." You, too, should not miss this rare opportunity and for only $99.99, you too will also be able to write like a lobotomized lab monkey high on crack.
