Oscar Dress?

Many females to the 82nd Annual academy awards, on sunday, March 7th, 2010, wore long flowing, ground hugging dresses. At some point, during the long running event, they have to relieve themselves. Are these dresses practical? What if the ladies room floor is wet? How do they navigate, a crowded foor, without someone stepping on or tripping over their dress? Why are women still wearing such dresses to events? Are such dresses a requirement? Can't other types of dresses be more practical and effective?
