Hi everyone.:)
I'm sure we have all heard that "Oxycontin" is being discontinued. Do you think that it's going to change anything dramatically in the way of painkiller abuse?

I think that is unfortunate for those who were truly very ill and in severe chronic pain. That drug was a great tool for pain management in end-of-life care. It's a shame that the abuse of some has to step on the rights/privileges of others.

Similarly annoyed, that when I want to buy some fricking Dayquil, I now have to pay $75 to see a doctor and get a prescription because junkies use it to make meth. So I am penalized?

Last time I was supersick (which happens about every five years) I went into a local pharmacy (I was about 30 at the time), this little 18 year old girl says "That is kind of a big bottle, don't you think?"

God Save Me, I could have slapped the bitch.

Cold medications are notorious for abuse. The same thing with Gravol/Dramamine. They're anti-nauseants but you can get high on them. I'm not proud of it, but a long time ago I used to take 30 Gravol a night to get high. She probably figured that you were abusing the Quil.

There is a diet pill my doctor offered to put me on, but after I researched it I'm not sure I want to. It's basically legal speed and is very addictive.

Yah, that was my issue. I've got this girl a few years older than my daughter giving me the inquisitor's eye and making snarky comments while I am sick as hell.

I honestly wanted to turn her over my knee and paddle her ass, and NOT in the sexy way.

If the pharmacies are going to appoint drug-user-profiling agents...let's make sure they aren't idiotic emo 18 year old girls with about as much life experience as my pet goldfish.

If I wanted to get high, it certainly wouldn't be on cold medicine.

;)

Being that young, she was probably a tech not a full pharmacist. Was this the first time you have bought cold medicine when she was working?

This was the first time I had bought cold medicine in five years. The first time I had ever been in that pharmacy. And to see me I am a fairly straight-laced upstanding citizen type (not to toot my own horn), but I don't look like a deviant. It was over the counter. She was a fricking clerk. Not even a tech.

That's a different story. Coming from a pharmacist or a tech, it's kind of understandable. If they sense you are abusing something they have a legal right to question why you are buying it if they sense abuse. A clerk however has absolutely no right to say something like that. If you were buying a bottle a day, I could see her saying something. Even still, to say what she said to you was assuming that you are abusing it and disrespectful. What's stupid here is that you were buying the daytime stuff. If memory serves, DayQuil doesn't contain alcohol like the regular stuff. Dextromethorphan (DXM) is why so many abuse cough and cold medications. She was out of line. I applaud your restraint. I don't think I would have had as much patience as you did after a remark like that from a completely unqualified person.

Well i was dissapointed today to hear from a nurse that they are not realy taking it off the market, they are just changing the format. Hope its not true

I once asked my doctor for a an appetite suppressant because one of my meds' side effects is hunger. It took him all of 3 seconds to say no. I never saw the big deal.

Hmm, idk, mine is giving it to me at my next appointment. Still not sure if I'll take it or not.

Although I'm still not a 100% sure why he turned me down. I do have an addictive personality. Maybe that's why. I know one thing. Usually when a patient asks for a particular medication, it's a sign of what they call "Drung Seeking Behaviour". Usually for a patients own reasons.

There are so many other meds that are either equal to, or greater than Oxycotin, I don't think it will matter. It has a generic too, which I'm sure they'll probably still make.

Is it adepex? I used to mix that with coke and snort it.

I think this is terrible for those that actually need pain meds. It's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I will be having some surgeries done in the next year or so. I hate the idea that I will not be prescribed something that I could have taken before, when I was a teenager and had surgery done.

Nothing against drug abusers, but they need to penalize the druggies, NOT the people who actually are in pain.

When there is a will, there is a way. If someone wants drugs badly enough -- they'll find a way to get it. Others will find a way to produce it if the money is good.

LeaningIntoTheMuse: Drug-abusers/addicts aren't the only ones at fault. You also have "dirty doctors" (yes, accredited and legit doctors), dealers, and those who fake pain to get the pills and then sell them.
