That's a lot of money to invest in making the robots. I wonder how that compares with paying wages? I can't comment on the suicides as I don't know enough about what is going on.

Worker shortages?!?!

Maybe they finally founded some labour unions, realized they've been had for the past decades and promptly demanded a raise- only to be sacked, the whole lot of them. Naturally, there wasn't enough sacks for everybody, so they had to share and it all became rather awkward.

Honestly, in the long run, the human element is always the most expensive and the least reliable. Its also a bit of a gamble for upfront capital investment versus overhead, but one that could pay off. Note that this does require highly skilled technical workers to maintain the facilities, which I feel is an opportunity that I might take advantage of sometime in the future.

I've known people who developed AI for corporate entities and their compensation packages are incredible, though so as their workload. Its just an incredibly difficult role to take, with very unique skillsets and personality requirements. Not many people are willing to have their home linked up to fiber optic so they can work 14 hours a day for 3 months - definitely an exercise in burnout. But often, six months or less is all they need to work for an entire year's salary.

It's an investment. Robots will get better and cheaper, and if they're already in place they'll be easier to upgrade. Besides, that leaves less menial work for humans to do so they can have more fun!

I personally support the future that robots can give us, though it also may lead us to our impending doom... But I think we are doomed no matter what so why not have some cool robots in the meantime? Yes, it will take over many labour workers' jobs and that can be quite unfair to them. It will also open up a vast number of new jobs at the same time. Either way, through the past centuries we've been replacing human jobs with machines. This includes sewing machines, cars, coffee machines, etc. that we openly welcome.

This technology will keep developing at a monstrous rate, and we'll find ourselves filled with robots not only taking over labour jobs, but also jobs of almost every kind. It's probably not so good for the human race, but we've always been self destructive... I support this method of self destruction somehow. (hmm)

And who doesn't want to have a robot companion when humans are so difficult to decipher? :)
