And have a nice day.

What are these made from? Are they computer generated? Oil paintings? I like them either way, but I'm genuinely interested.

I find the images quite striking. To me, it's a combination of land, sea, space and plant cells (phloem and xylem, if I'm thinking correctly)...ha, college biology did help me in something! I think they are very unique.

Anyway, I'm like Cavey and would like to know how they are made. Let us know, John.

Thank you for your interest in my bfs work. I will have to have him explain if that is okay. Here he goes.

Hello. I am Chris Girard, and I created these images.
These are multimedia works in that I begin with pieces of art I make using oils, water, dyes and various thinners on and between sheets of glass and in various vessels.
To create the art that I photograph between the sheets of glass, I begin by smearing oil on a glass sheet (11 x 14 inches). Then I 'load' the sheet with layers of dye and spread it with the thinners. As each layer must dry before I lay down the next layer, it may take a day or two for this process. I take a lot of photographs through out this part of the work. After several layers are layered this way, I spray on more thinners to cause the dyes to run together. I photograph this and then I lay another sheet of glass over the first and photograph those results as well.
I photograph that art over a light table I designed for the purpose. It functions as a huge microscope; I have lights shine through these sheets of glass illuminating the dyes and I photograph them with a macro (magnifying) lens. So a lot of the shapes look like either organic forms or fractals (more about fractals in a moment). I also shoot oil, water, and dyes in various vessels over the light table.
In a single day of photography I might take a couple thousand photos of this process out of which I might use maybe 20. I layer these images together to form the basis or background of my further work. So out of several days of shooting and thousands of photos, I might be able to create the backgrounds of 5 or 6 images.
As I layer the images, I edit the color selectively. It is a process that requires that I define sections of the image by hand and alter them one by one.
Next, I use fractal software with which I generate fractals. I do this all day some days. I have to have an extensive library of fractals to work from in order to create an image like the ones I do. It is not always possible to create a fractal to order, so I experiment all day and save the results, never knowing which ones I will use.
I have a third category of software I work with. I use that software to create objects such as spheres which have been mapped with other images I have created just for that purpose. The spheres You see in the first one were mostly created that way.
I layer the oil/water/dye/thinner photos with the objects and fractals to create images like the ones you see above. I would like to state that while these images are abstract, I also create figurative images. John will upload an example of that.

The Heron in the image is composed entirely of fractals.
