After a severe depression in December
I started losing weight, cleaning up my place, and generally having some hope. But I have gained back half of the weight that I had lost, and now feel completely unmotivated to work on fixing my life.

What happened?

Look on the bright side, you've only gained half the weight rather than all the weight. Try to focus on the weight that you have lost and gather all your strength to continue the good work that you have done thus far. We all experience blips as we strive to achieve our targets. You will feel a lot worse should regain all your weight and be back at square one. Perhaps you should give yourself a reward for the weight that you have lost and then as a further incentive, give yourself another reward when you have lost the weight you have gained. I don't know how much weight you have to lose but if it's a large amount, set small goals for yourself and give yourself non-food rewards each time you reach these goals until you reach your target weight. You will feel better and it will give you the motivation to sort out the other areas of your life and help to keep your depression at bay. I hope this advice helps you. Best wishes.

Life, did you lose the weight because of the depression or the rebound?

When people get past depression, or find a new motivation they did not have before, they frequently overcompensate before leveling out again. The key is to stay 'leveled out' and not slump back down again.

You haven't gained weight, you're still in the 'green'. Watch what you're eating and make sure to exercise EVERY DAY. You typically have to perform an activity daily or regularly for a cycle of 21 days before it becomes a habit...and we are absolutely creatures of habit.

A lot of people I talk to don't have a realistic concept of calories. I'm one of those people, actually. If you punch your numbers in to a piece of equipment that counts calories burned, you're burning a lot less than it feels like. I envision the twinkies just being incinerated in the furnace of my soul as I pound out miles on the exercise bike, but the reality is that I might be drenched in sweat before I burn off even one.

When you think you're done...do a little more. When your legs are exhausted, try to do push ups. (don't have a heart attack).
Roar and yell. Do not be conquered.
When you want the burger, eat a salad and chicken.
When you buy bread, don't buy white. The whiter the bread, the sooner you're dead.

Start with this as the point of mastery from which you will rule the circle around you. Be a sovereign over yourself and all that you do. Exercise is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to engrain this new attitude.

Lost the weight because I gave up alcohol, and started counting calories too.
Felt like I was making progress, then not so much, then back-sliding (except for the booze, 'cause I never want THAT in my life again)
but goodies are doing swan dives off of the shelves and into my shopping cart!

I must be seeking comfort.
