Here's a light-hearted story ......

----------------------------------

A wayward cat chanced upon a wise old cat sitting in the garden of a monastery.

"Greetings! How is your day so far?" , asked the benevolent cat.

The scruffy looking visitor said , "Oh, what a horrible day! For some reason, things don't seem right for me. In fact, my life is pretty much of a struggle."

The wise cat enquired, "How so, dear one?"

"Nothing seems to be going right for me. I just lost my appetite for rats, too. Can you imagine a cat not chasing rats anymore?" said the visitor cat.

"Hmm... This might have something to do with your past karma. Would you like me to give you  a past life reading?", offered the wise cat.

The visitor jumped at the chance, "Sure, if it's up your alley!".

And so, the wise one went into a meditative state. Moments later, it regained consciousness and explained, " Well, I have good and bad news, for you."

"Tell me the good news first!" , exclaimed the visitor.

"Dear one, you have made a great progress in your past lives. As such, you are so close to reaching the state of eternal bliss and enlightenment. Even in this lifetime, you are practicing non-violence almost to perfection. Hence your fading appetite for killing rats." , came the reply.

"Wow, I never thought about that. So what's the bad news?", queried the visitor.

"Well..... you are in your ninth lifetime now. You know what that means?" said the wise cat.

"Oh, dear... This must be my last lifetime... But I can still attain enlightenment if I put more effort before my time is up, right?" asked the desperate cat.

"Theoretically yes..... However, behind you right now is a dog, who is failing miserably at practicing non-violence in this lifetime!" , came the reply last heard by the visitor cat.

 "Rats!" - visitor cat.
