I am sure that everyone has heard of the latest celebrity scandal known as the fappening, where dozens of icloud accounts got "hacked" and large collections of photos leaked online.

I have read many opinions about it, some from celebrities complaining that they were violated and asking for law enforcement to step in.
and others saying, hey, if you don't want your pictures out there, don't take nekkid pics of yourself!

I am wondering what your opinions are?
are they victims or just plain stupid? or is the entire thing a publicity stunt?
can or should people really expect privacy as a right when they are willingly living in the publics consciousness?

my personal view is, that people have to be responsible for themselves to a certain degree.
I cannot imagine a scenario where I would pose for a nude selfie and upload it to.. anywhere..
why do they do it?
is it pure vanity that makes them do it and pure karma that helps them find their way to the public domain?

is it right that someone can spend most of their lives working hard to get attention and choose a career as a celebrity, only to think they can turn it off when they chose to?
one day they dress to the hilt and walk the red carpet and go far far out of their way to get the worlds attention, and they next day they think the can put on tights and no makeup and run to the gym down public streets in total peace and get angry if someone attempts to take pictures of them when then are out of their control.

with all the sextape scandals over the years, did the possibility of this never cross their minds when they were making these vids and pics?

I say they knew perfectly well what they were doing. and if they did not and truly expected this to never happen, then they are simply idiots.

^^^Could the celebs have done more to protect themselves, say... be aware of how data clouds work? Sure. But it doesn't matter if they're idiots or not, it was still illegal for someone to steal and distribute the photos.

End of story.

Those were private pictures from their phones and computers as far as I know, just because they're celebrities doesn't give people the right to hack or stalk them, although a lot of them bring it on themselves. I don't feel sorry for them.

I hate the celeb culture mentality of people these days, I couldn't care less about an actors personal life.

I haven't seen any of these pics or vids, couldn't be arsed searching for them, if I want to see porn I'll watch porn.

I don't think anyone deserves to be hacked and have their stuff stolen. And what they take photos of in their free time is their own business.

they were confirmed hacked from iCloud, not personal computers.
I can see if that was the case.. or if someone broke into their house and stole them.. but they were uploaded to a cloud server!
who does that? I mean really..
have they been under a rock the past many years with all these leaked sextapes and didn't know the potential consequences?
I don't feel sorry of them myself. only feel sorry that we put people on a pedestal that have pea brains and low morales.

"Winstead suggested a longstanding effort by the hacker. “Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this. Feeling for everyone who got hacked,” she wrote.

However the independent security expert Graham Cluley points out that Winstead may have thought that she had deleted the photos from her phone – but with modern smartphones, deleting a picture from the phone does not always mean that no copies exist.

Modern smartphones routinely save photos to the cloud because they often lack enough capacity for the huge number of photos that people take. Apple’s iPhone by default saves photos to iCloud"

They are definitely victims. What happened to them was and is a crime and whoever hacked them should be punished.

However, that doesn't mean they aren't stupid too, IMO....I don't just mean the celebrities that do it, though, I mean everyone that does it. If you take those pictures, you will ALWAYS have a chance of getting them stolen or having a scorned ex take them and post them somewhere. Don't take the pictures and they can't be taken and posted somewhere else.

ya, the "Apple’s iPhone by default saves photos to iCloud" doesn't wash with me..
my phone tried to do that when I first set up my accounts as well, they all try to sync, but just like anything else, you pay attention when installing and setting things up and it's easy to uncheck a box..
it's not like it's a hidden option that nobody knows about.

^^^Have you considered that not everyone is as tech savvy as you?

Perhaps some of these celebs had boyfriends or assistants or friends set up their iphone accounts for them, so they didn't know they were automatically backing up to the cloud.

Well I feel sorry for them, because I have this thing called empathy.

Also... please explain to me how privately taking sexy pictures indicates that these people have low morals. You know that a lot of the pictures were taken for boyfriends/husbands, right? Actors/actresses/models are frequently parted from their loved ones while working on projects, so sending each other private pictures to try to keep the spark alive when separated doesn't seem so horrible to me.

That's horrible, it must be hard taking every precaution when a lot of people know you.

BJD and Callie speak sense. Were the celebrities naive in uploading their photos to the cloud? Yes. Does that mean that they are any less of a victim and in some way deserve to be publicly humiliated? No.

I feel just as empathetic towards these public figures as I do to the thousands of normal people that have been the victim of hackers and ex-partners.

I'm not convinced that the ones of Jennifer Lawrence with the spunk covered face are real. One must always be wary about the authenticity of celeb photos. Pretty sure that's something Confucius would have said were he alive today.

What bothers me is that when you mention that they could have been more careful, there are a bunch of people with shocked-looking "pod-people stares," pointing at us and making accusations of "victim-shaming," which is utter nonsense.

What happened to these women is horrible. However, it should also serve as a lesson to them. They should have been protecting themselves in the same way that they protect themselves from physical attack by hiring bodyguards.
