Definitely the past, not very optimistic about the future judging by the current state of the world.

I'd go with "considered less attractive, but loves and appreciates me".
I've come to realize that niceness and warmth are important to me, and coldness is a dealbreaker.
I wouldn't be happy with or care about an emotionally cold person, no matter how physically hot they are.
