English mostly self taught while I was good at French and FoxPro ... they also taught me Russian, BASIC, Fortran, Pascal, C/C++ but to no avail

monolingual 'cept for a bit of French. studied it since high school but still cannot converse with anybody face to face except by writing.

Wow, 4 years? I took 2. I don't remember much of it, except a few words or sentences.

It was required for us to take 4 years of some language.
I think the choices were French, Spanish, or Italian.
I picked Spanish because that one seemed to be the most sensible choice.
Most people did their first year in junior high, so they only had to take 3 more years but I foolishly did not.

I remember a few basic words and phrases too, some stuck in my head for some reason.
But as with most things, you either use it, or lose it.

Yeah, I think those who had a knack for speaking different foreign languages would pick up on it easier. Wow, you had to have 4 years? We only needed 1 year.
