Pretty much says it all. Here's a holy cross and some garlic to keep away the protestant work ethic vampires.

Seven out of 10 workers have "checked out" at work or are "actively disengaged," according to a recent Gallup survey.

In its ongoing survey of the American workplace, Gallup found that only 30 percent of workers are "were engaged, or involved in, enthusiastic about, and committed to their workplace." Although that equals the high in engagement since Gallup began studying the issue in 2000, it is overshadowed by the number of workers who aren't committed to a performing at a high level -- which Gallup says costs companies money.

The poll, released last week, examined worker engagement beginning in 2010 and ending in 2012. The previous poll period covered 2008 through 2010.

This isn't new really, and something I learned young. You go to work to earn money, simple, but if you end up doing something you enjoy then that's a bonus.

I think there are times in everyone's career that they're even satisfied with that they find themselves "checked out."

and that is the problem isn't it?
if more people had the attitude that they were going to try to find a job that makes then happy (or at least gives them some satisfaction) then everyone would be happier and the world a better place.
I once had a teacher tell me that: if you start waking in the morning and your mind is searching for excuses why you shouldn't go to work, or dreading the day ahead of you.. then QUIT and save everyone the trouble and find a job that fits you.
we spend way too much of our lives at work to be doing things that we don't enjoy or find any form of satisfaction in.
it's not like there wont be someone else that comes along that doesn't mind the jobs you cant stand.

Exactly. I suggest 7 out of 10 people get the hell over it.

I don't mind my job. I work hard every day. I have standards, I care.
People piss me off but I soon forget about it !

Still is pretty sad do dedicate your life to something you don't care about.
You can deny that all you want but it's still there...

If this was the case there would be nobody to fill the jobs that nobody wants to do, what then?

I've had a wide variety of crappy jobs, some of which really sucked the life out of me. Now I have a job that is awesome, it doesn't pay that much but still I consider myself very, very lucky. The reason why it is awesome is because I feel supported and valued.

Nobody likes working. If something is work, it isn't fun.

I've had two retail jobs that I enjoyed. The rest sucked monkey balls.

I like being busy while working. If things become slow or boring I begin to hate it.

Slow or boring describe all retail jobs.

The only reason I liked those two jobs was because I made friends. In the others, I was bullied.

I would probably hate it too. Standing around talking to co-workers wouldn't be so bad if I weren't so quiet.

that may be the case if everyone liked the same kinds of jobs...
but some people really don't like responsibility and want a factory-style secure job while others like freelance sales and other like the corporate ladder and so on.
my step father once told me about how he loved working for general Motors. he didn't mind the factory setting and thrived in his job. meanwhile his brother, who started at the same time he did, quit and turned to driving a truck because he couldn't stand that type of job. where as I have always worked in trades and couldn't stand either of their jobs.
there will always be someone suited for every position out there at some point or other.
but to stay in a job that you hate or have to force yourself to tolerate for the rest of your working life.. is missing the entire point of life all together..

I understand what you're saying, but I doubt there would be enough people to occupy all jobs that way as there's some pretty horrible jobs, an the only way people do them is because the pay is good.

In an ideal world then it probably would be how you say, but to be honest i don't think anyone knows what the point of life is. Is it to enjoy? To have kids? Provide for family? Or all?

I work in a very busy food shop. Time really goes fast and most of the customers are great to talk to !

I would love to have a job, to even hate about. It's kind of sad that people are doing work what they don't like...

I absolutely hate my job, but that's only because I dislike what I do.
