As much as I hate and loathe 'Apathy', I feels it's sometimes the best way to deal with my problems. Today at work, I was apathetic towards a rude customer whereas I usally fill up with anger and hatred inside.

Are you Apathetic in these situations?

Thanks for reading.

I think that is actually a better way to deal with such situations. I mean, if you would become angry that would cloud your judgement and so forth. Save your energy and emotion for situations that are "worth it" in your opinion.

No problem at all :)

I am not sure it's apathy at all. I'd even venture to say it's wise.

There are lots of difficult, unreasonable people out there and we are bound to bump into them. And if you work in retail you will bump into them a lot and they will feel free to be any way they want with you because you are the customer.

So to choose not to be ruffled by these people is smart, not apathetic. It's a professional, calm way to deal with the unreasonable folks out there.

Why waste energy/emotion on such people? It's smart to detach and focus on your own life and how you feel.

Have I become Apathetic what? ;)

I wouldn't say I am Apathetic. But I do let VERY little bother me these days. It's not down to a lack of emotion. It's down to an incredible ability to control emotion, so that emotion does not control me :p I like to think it is a brilliant skill I've learned over the years.

Also I might suppress emotions a little :D

I'm not sure if it is apathy... it sounds more like a good work/life attitude.

I have really had to take on that sort of attitude at work, not just with customers but some awful management, because it was having a real impact on my mental wellbeing.

Now I just actively try and take on the attitude "don't take it personally". Yes the customer or manager is being a total arse today, but they might have an overbearing manager themselves, or a massive workload or difficult home life. Of course some people are just genuinely rude or arrogant, but I find that by keeping other reasons in mind I can take it less personally and so it has much less of an impact on how I feel.

ohh boy, isn't this a heady subject? am i apathetic? HELL YEAH IM APATHETIC!!! i'm sick and tired of all the bull **** i've had to go through. all the smug ******** i had to deal with, all the people that get ahead by selling themselves like arrogant prostitutes, no one concerned how ****** up our government is, the detrimental effects to our environment, how corporations suck our very living existance where we end up as just another trademark or logo. how ******** with no talent become famous because of good looks and making sex tapes, how the world worships beauty over intelligence, how everyone worships money. but the world gets more ****** up when you realize you can't do a single thing to stop it. you understand how greedy and corrupt the capitalist system is but you need money to survive, you need their products in order to live. sure you can make temporary change but people all go back to their same habits. life is hell. it take all my strength for me to survive. do you think i have the energy to help others? really all it comes down to is luck. lucky enough to not be born a starving child in africa. because no matter if you save that child from starvation, there are thousands more that suffer and die each day. what a horrible place this world is. it's best if it would all end so as to not prolong our misery. i tried to be a caring person. i really did. but when worse leads to worse there really is nothing you can do. what a pathethic existence we humans have.

there is a saying - 'the customer is always right' - no matter how rude a customer is, you have to keep your calm and be polite. (where I work )

The customer is not always right. That's just a saying to get people away from the opposite extreme.

The customer is right. Should the customer ever be wrong ("I haven't had enough to drink", "I shouldn't have to pay for this crappy food", grabbing the waitstaff's chest, etc), we have bouncers to escort the customer away from the premises.

Being calm is okay, being dead inside, on the other hand is troublesome rather than professional.

I've sadly become apathetic towards pretty much everything, with a only handful of exceptions.
It comes with the territory.
Same thing with me. Don't think it's doing me any favours though.
