IMO, everybody should watch the following PBS Frontline report on the plastics industry (Plastic Wars):

We have all been lied too yet once again.

They're destroying our planet for money and lying to us about it all for as long as they can until a point of no return is reached where nothing is going to work and where those responsible won't be around to face punishment for decades of greed-driven lobbying and lethal pollution that will intoxicate nature and the human race for hundreds, if not thousands of years to come and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it, as evidenced by the problem worsening in spite of decades of public awareness campaigns.
Why? Because they think this planet isn't ours, the general population, they think this planet is theirs to do whatever they want with it, and by "they" I mean governments and corporations propped up by the banks.
Welcome to the "bright" future they promised, which was also a lie.
That's why I call them "traitors to the Human race" because that's exactly what they are.
And they are surprised ( or pretend to be ) when men like me don't believe a single word that goes past their lips.

I really don't understand why the general population doesn't look or even want to look behind the curtains to see how things really are. It's like the general population only meaningfully cares about their own immediate situation. So, as long as they get their "free" money, which end up costing them multiple times more down the road, and conveniences nothing else really matters. I don't have any kids to be concerned about. Yet, I seem to be way more concerned about the future of my country and this planet. How can people with kids that want their future offspring to have a quality life knowingly ignore all the crap that's going on like the plastic situation? It seems like the general population has been brainwashed into believing anything adverse is a false conspiracy theory that should be criticized and fought against not investigated. This lack of real concern and lack of real action is what will be our downfall. Then everybody will say they had no idea what was really going on and it wasn't their fault.

The general population is too busy making ends meet and trying not to get fired from their job to continue to have a roof over their head and food on the table but they know what's going on, for the most part. Most people understand they're powerless to stop the abuses. Most people I've talked to over the years understand there is something very wrong with those who govern us and those who pay them to be able to destroy this planet but they understand there isn't much they can do besides protesting - which amounts to pissing in the wind - and trying to sort out their trash best they can.
Many of the people I've talked to understand we're ******, thanks to the greed and evil of a few.

The first 'Earth Day' was in 1970. One of the issues of the day was plastics. It was seen as something that would never decompose. Microplastics weren't even heard of at the time.

There was a push to reduce 'one use' plastics before they had the planet completely polluted.  The plastic industry responded with a PR campaign prompting plastic as an "inert nonpolluting landfill". It must have been pretty effective because it seem to have taken islands of floating plastic for the concern to reach the level that it used to be.

In the video, they explain that most plastics are not recycled even the ones with the stupid stamp on the bottom saying they can be. It's just too expensive to recycle them so they don't. So, having the consumers believe that they can have any real dent on the plastic crisis by sorting their plastics is fallacy created by the plastics industry to keep producing more plastics.

BTW, every human being now has plastic in the bodies. So, your future children and grand children will also have even more plastics in their bodies. At some point people should care about that. People want healthy offspring don't they?

Yes, I have seen the video. It is a continuation of the PR campaign. Getting the people involved is rather brilliant. If you can make them feel that they are making a difference, that is half the battle. It may also explain the recycle trucks you occasionally see dumping at the landfill.
