I had telephone friends whom I have never seen in person. That was long before the Internet -- 1980s. I was referred to them by other friends I had.

It is likely that such friendships existed even in 1920s -- perhaps among WWI veterans.

I tried that about 30 years ago. Expensive and useless.

I would rather talk to a therapist for much lower cost.
