This suddenly popped in to my head, wanting to write an essay about motivation and sharing what helped me be where i am now. So here goes. Don't credit me though, credit the people that inspired me.
"Motivation is something everyone needs to function. Motivation get out of bed. Motivation to log into this forum. Motivation to your arm slightly to the left. Anything.
Motivation is the result of weighing the pros and cons for any particular action. If there isn't enough motivation, we simply don't wake up, we simply don't log in, and simply let our arm rest even though it's slightly uncomfortable.
That's the principle. The term seems to be applied usually to greater things. People can feel guilty if they cannot bring up the motivation to do a particular thing they think is important.
So how do we increase motivation? By increasing the pros for any particular action. How do we do that?
I often see in people, including myself, since i'm a person, that the weighed pros and cons are usually short term, with only the long term effects being possible taken into account when we get to the cons. I believe that that is the problem for the lack of motivation, largely. So, how do we increase the awareness for the long term pros? In other words, how do we increase motivation?
I've watched/listened to alot of motivational videos on the internet, listening carefully to the wisdom that the people have to share. What i want to do is share with you the things that are for me the core essences of what motivates me to do what i do.
Number 1: What do you want?
Alot of people get to this one, but i'm going to credit it to Eric Thomas. He said: "Look, wathever you're doing, stop doing what you're doing. I got a question for you. What; do; you; want? It's really simple: What do you want?" He's of course referring to what you really want. That childhood dream you had before it got crushed by the indoctrination of society, telling you it's not possible.
Number 2: Succeed or die trying.
This one is credited to Will Smith. In a video fragment he said: "The only thing that's distinctively different about me, is, i'm not afraid to die on a treadmill. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, but if we get on a treadmill together, there's two things: You're getting off first, or i'm going to die. It's really that simple." So, follow your dream and dare to take risks, or you will never achieve true happiness. Don't be afraid to take some pain, which is a theme Eric Thomas uses alot.
Number 3: Ignore the nay-sayers.
You can never have a castle. You can never get that high paying job. You aren't smart enough to go to this university. You can't do this and that. I think alot of people have grown to believe that, since it's pounded in us from the beginning, but you can get what you want, wathever you want. However you're not going to get it if you're not willing to take risks, if you're stepping off that treadmill saying "i'm tired." The world might hate you, but if you achieve your goal after a life of trying, a life of falling and standing up, a life of preperation for that one single moment, then what else matters? Is there even a greater happiness? I don't think so. Don't become that "i wish i did this and that" type of person when you get older. Live your dream."
