I’ve felt like that when I wasn’t actually engaging with anyone in a group.

Something along that line, where I want to be with people but when I am, then I want to get away and relax.

Is that true even if you’re engaging with someone?

That is better than being someplace and feeling that it is a waste of time. I would say yes, but to a lesser degree.

Somewhat related was when I visited some people in another state. One night we spent in the bar, meeting people and playing games like
foosball with the locals. I was staying with these people so when we get back home late at night, I grab a beer to drink while I sat up
and unwound from the stress of being around people. They noticed that and just laughed, like who sits up alone and drinks a beer after a night at the bar.

Its like you crave alone during that time, but sometimes you do need to be in the company of others for well short periods.

I've never felt lonely with people around, but maybe it's because you're around the wrong people? Or maybe you want to be with someone, but still cherish your alone time. I love my time for myself, as well as with my person. But, we can still feel alone in a room full of people. I know what you're getting at, but I've never personally felt that way.

Selma Jacobson: [after Martinius turns down Pete Hanson's offer
to drive him to the grange meeting] Why didn't you wanna go, Pa?

Martinius Jacobson: [smoking his pipe on the porch and
contemplatively looking up at the night sky] Oh, I don't
know. On a night like this with a lot of people around, I...
I get lonesome feeling.

Selma Jacobson: Can you be lonesome with people?

Martinius Jacobson: Sometimes.

You can definitely feel alone when you are around others. It's entirely about connection and whether you want to be there. Your mindset at the time plays a part in it too, especially if you are pretending to be anything other than you actually are....i.e. pretending you are okay when you aren't or pretending to be happy when you aren't.
