How are SEO articles usually linked back to the target site (where the actual product is sold)?
When I look at samples, most of the times there is no link to the target site.
Will the URL be only in the "bio" section of the author?

SEO articles focus on keywords that are spread throughout the article and are hyperlinked. The articles must be informative to the product or search engines like Google won't cache it because a search engine's job is to produce informative content for the person that's searching. Keywords are usually hyperlinked once in the body of the article, used sparingly throughout the rest of the body of the article, then linked again in the "about the author".

The "about the author" is simply another formality used to link to the product (or website). Usually articles will only reference 2 or 3 keywords because if they fill up the whole article with hyperlinked keywords, it isn't being informative content.

I used to write SEO articles. :(

Yes usually we put URL only in the "bio" section of the author because google gives the importance to content other SE have their strategy.
