I find it interesting, a bit strange and yet sort of funny how people will do stuff like this. That is, talk to you at one moment then decide to ignore you the next. It makes me think that these kinds of people, even though they may appear to be well adjusted or whatever, are maybe really just fake, insecure, or possibly just scared.
Also little things like that, like just not accepting a harmless friend request I think may say something about his character... However, facebook is a strange place. The way people are on there is often not the way they are in real life. Its not a very good place, in my opinion. Maybe he has his reasons not to want to get involved with people on there.
If you re now talking to him, perhaps you could ask him: I sent you a friend request,, did you get it? (If you don't think you will be upset too much by the outcome). Or you could ask him: what do you think of facebook? Then later: I sent you a friend request on there did you get it?
