I think i'm too old to celebrate birthdays.
i don't care about it.
my family might get me a card or a gift, and i'll say thank you of course. but other than that, i'm not bothered. it's just another day.

is this common, or is it just a minority thing?

I'm also past the age of getting excited about my birthday and I think many other people also are blasé past a certain age. This past year I didn't even celebrate the day, not even at home alone with a special meal or going to a restaurant or whatever, I just let the day pass like another ordinary one. I did get a few messages from my children ( they live on another continent from me ) late in the evening but it wasn't "my birthday" for most of the day. I'm 51. What's great about being 51, for me, is that I can say "I don't care" and won't hear a 15min lecture about how and why I should care.

I quit celebrating my birthday at about age 11 or 12. My parents were completely done with kids at that point. A past girlfriend did plan out a nice day for us to share together one time when I was about 32 or so. But, that's about it. Birthdays, holidays, special events are all just naaaaaaa, whatever, to me.

We three last posters are in our 50s... so a birthday isn't really that special anymore, though I do take note of the calendar and try to have a good day on my birthday. Do something cool outdoors, make a good dinner right here at home, that sorta thing. Possibly get drunk and celebrate one more year of survival in this crazy ol' world...

Same here. I've never been big on any holiday and only celebrated Christmas because of the kids. To me, all the days in the week or months in the year are just a way of cutting time into manageable portions. Sometimes I'd show up for work and forget it's a holiday. Sometimes I'd work on holidays, too, when I'd have the keys to the shop or find the whole site open but deserted.

^ :) I always volunteered to work the holiday periods. Everybody felt sorry for me. But, it was great. I had the entire office to myself. :)

Exactly. No co-workers, coffee breaks anytime, no HR to deal with, coming back from lunch late and leaving work early   :D

Haha, you guys are funny... great minds think alike!

I was very surprised to see how much I had in common with so many other men once it became easy to exchange notes on life. Many people complain about "social media" ( rightly ) but the Internet itself has been instrumental in showing us that we are not alone in our day-to-day troubles and that many of the anecdotes we thought were distinct to our own story were actually commonplace.

It's my birthday soon too. Another year older, with things very much NOT the way I want them to be. I'm not looking forward to it.

Making my life the way I want it to be is the only thing that will make me genuinely happy anymore. Birthdays by themselves, just won't do it.

I have nothing against the Internet, though some of the social media platforms do indeed suck. However, the Internet can be quite useful... for example, when I need to view a video tutorial on a specific automotive repair. In this electronic age, there are so many tutorials out there in cyberspace, there's no excuse for NOT tackling some simple repair and saving heller money. I've always been handy with tools, I got an early start by turning wrenches on BMX bikes and my old Schwinn paperbike... skateboards too, lol. I do all the work on my own car, and she runs like a top, even if she is nearly 20 years old. My maxim is that I NEVER pay ANYONE to do a job I can do myself... only when I've reached the limit of my ability or run up on a brick wall, THEN I pay someone, but not a moment before, and only AFTER I've exhausted all efforts to solve the problem. That's just how I am, and some folks think I'm a cheap ******* for doing this, but I save heller money, and to me that is most important. The Internet also comes in handy when I wanna watch skateboarding videos, lol...

P.S. Some video tutorials are better than others, lol...   ;)

I fully agree with you and we're not different from one another. I, too, would look up on the Net to find out how to repair my stuff. I only go to the repair shops when I've hit a wall or just simply do not have the tools for the job or when I just don't understand how to. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, lol.  I love manual labor and tinkering with stuff although I'm just as comfortable in an office.
And FYI: "Cheap *******" is a compliment!

I'm very much of a similar mindset. I'll be 34 this year and I really don't feel there's much to celebrate.
