What’s people's gut feeling about this tantalising slip by NASA that Discovery has found something earth shaking and historic?

They are due to give a full announcement early December once they validate what they have found. I'm guessing its organic compounds that would point to microbiological life rather than life itself, or less exciting just the capacity to host life at some point in its history. Still, it’s good to speculate....

Just saw about this very interesting, i think some said it may be to do with finding methane which should indicate organic life.

Yup, initial tests didn't find any in the atmosphere but possibly its been detected in the soil.

I hope it isn't, I hope its a big 16 legged space spider.

I think what it's all about is merely that they have discovered Mars has a solid ice core, and that some alien race built a huge steam generator under the surface that can release oxygen from the ice to create an atmosphere. it's all being kept super-secret though as mining rights are being fought over by the worlds largest corporations to see who will build a mining colony there.

There's a sci-fi novel somewhere in there.. :)

I do wonder about the implications for Earth if life existed/exists on Mars. The discovery that our next door neighbour also sustains life dramatically increases the chance of life beyond our solar system. It could also focus attention on a manned mission to the planet in our lifetimes. It would be a shot in the arm for space exploration, that's for sure although I would be amazed if that was the announcement, I'm expecting the inevitable disappointment.

Those farts had to come from somewhere. Or it could have been pig $hit. :)

or A farting pig on Mars lol lol

Planets are always moving orbits, so like Earth (which according to some scientists is moving away from the sun) , it depends if the position of Mars puts it in a life sustaining position or was once one.

Thats my theory. :p

Look forward to hear what they announce.

Mars is fully in the goldilocks zone and has substantial evidence that it once had free flowing water and possibly an atmosphere. Whether life exist(ed) or not, it's very possible it could have sustained life at some point, even now, given the extreme environments where we find live on earth.

Any life would HAVE to be underground on Mars -- given that the planet's atmosphere isn't thick enough to fully protect biological entities on the surface from the sun's radiation. Sunbursts and flares would irradiate life on the planet... unless it's at least a few meters underground.

It's pretty awesome that NASA may have found evidence of life on another planet -- I eagerly await the announcement.

Or at least a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Until I see evidence of a girl with three ****s, I don't see the big deal even if we do find life there.

I wonder if we did, how long it would take for men to evolve an extra hand...

We don't HAVE to evolve extra hands.

We can use science and cloning to give ourselves all the extra appendages we need.

Let's not limit it to JUST hands. ;)

?This forum isn't reuters?

I think whatever is going to be announced is gong to be an anti climax too, NASA have said as much.
