Anybody else have migraines ?

I have had them all my life. When I was a kid, I would be very sick and in bed for a few days. Now I don't get the headaches so much, just the visual disturbance. I went from 16 years to 30 without getting one and then they started up again. I get them more often now, every 3 weeks on average but they don't last as long, sometimes only an hour.

At work I have to go into the canteen and switch the lights off and sit in the dark until it goes away. My boss tells me to goto the doctors. I have several times but they can't do anything for me. I have bought these special glasses now and they do work. When I get the visual disturbance I pop the glasses on and I can carry on working or if I am at home watching tv. I don't have to goto bed anymore.

Even though the migraines only last an hour, I feel tired and out of sorts for the next few days. I had one this morning walking to work. Even though it was dark, I put my special glasses on and it went away. God knows what I looked like though !

That sucks man :O

I used to suffer with pretty bad migraines when I was younger. Whenever I got one, I'd have to sleep it off. Painkillers would only stop the pain temporarily. Now however, I can't say I get them often at all. I don't think I've had one for a few years in fact. Maybe a bad headache at worst.

I actually went to the doctor and was examined and all he said was that I suffered from severe migraines and all he could do was give me ibuprofen or use over the counter stuff which never really worked at all. What would help me and still does is going in a dark room and eating a whole bunch of ice. I once had a migraine so bad it felt like someone was taking a knife to my head. I couldn't even get out of bed.

the visual distubance is weird. I can't focus on anything and I can't read anything. For example if the word 'lonely' was on the screen, I wouldn't be able to read every letter. The 'n' would be missing and no matter how hard I looked, it wouldn't be there ! It's really odd. And the lights get about 10 times brighter so I can't even open my eyes. When I close my eyes, I see strange shapes and colours under my eyelids.

The longer I go without going into a dark place, the worse I will feel. eg headaches, sickness, numbness etc.

But thankfully they are getting better as I get older and my glasses do help ! (Even though at work the customers were calling me Roy Orbison !)

Putter65 i have em, though less frequently but this headache is horrible. Avoid the things that trigger your migraine. In my case they are exhaustion, dehydration and lack of sleep. And if you are having em so frequently then why don't you go for prophylaxis? Calcium Channel blockers, Beta blockers, SSRIs are good prophylactic agents.

I've been to the doctors a few times and he isn't interested.

I'm getting more but they are milder. I bought these special glasses from the internet for £42 and they do seem to work. So I carry them around with me. The last one at work I was able to continue and it went away. My triggers seem to be bright lights.

I suffer from hydrophalus because of my spina bifida. So migranes and seizures are the norm for me. I could have gotten a shunt but I refused it. When I get migranes I quickly take advil extra strength and they seem to help. At one time was on tylonel 3 with codiene for migranes but thats when they were worse and I was taking migranes daily. Now not so often.

Roy Orbison *giggles* too cute. That's crazy with the vision thing. I haven't had that happen to me. Usually mine were triggered by heat. I could never survive the summer or any hot place without a migraine. But I would get sick after a while or real dizzy or the very popular throbbing head feeling. Thankfully I haven't had one in like 2 years. Just real small headaches. But I'm glad the glasses help you in some way

thanks.

I feel sorry for everybody effected with migraines ! :)

I've never had migraines before. I hear they're brutal. Are they so severe that Advil or regular Tylenol can't bring you any relief?

Normally you can't carry on with your day. I used to go to bed, shut the curtains and try to goto sleep. If I didn't (goto sleep) then the headaches would get worse and I would be sick. It was a 12 hour experience for me as well. I used to leave work early but they never understood I couldn't function with a migraine. They thought a simple headache tablet would do.
