When I was 20 or so, and I was talking to an international group at some kind of party.
English was not his first language (neither is mine), and he did not understand me.
I said "I thought English was a world language."
He replied : "No, broken English is a world language..."
 
When I started my career job I took over the office space of an old guy who had just retired. Taped to the front of the file cabinet was a note that read “Don’t let the *******s grind you down.” Though I never met him those words have come to mind many times ever since.
 
I like those phrases where you first think they mean one thing, then read the rest of the phrase and get that it actually means something else, such as:

I still miss my ex, but my aim is getting better.
