(Search yielded a swearing thread, but it was years old and didn't include the subject of slang.)

How do you guys feel about swearing and slang (the street-talk sort?), and the individuals who use them? Do you have more tolerance for one than the other? Do they give you a bad impression?

I see it as people communicating. Everyone is different, so everyone communicates different. There are people who swear who could be peaceful, and people who don't who could be hostile. I just listen to what they have to say, in wathever way they want to make things clear.

Well....I can put up with it unless its every other word. I personally avoid using slang/swear words.

I do swear at times; the habit of some people close to me being disagreeable has made me so. When you have to push away someone, swearing at them is better than thrashing around, hurting them, or running away. Unfortunately this swearing makes some of the words sometimes creep in my day-to-day life.

It depends on the context for me. Phrases such as "F it" or "*******" which are not targeted at someone in specific, I don't mind a lot hearing them.

I'm fine with swearing apart from a few choice words. I know thats kind of stupid but they have associations for me that others don't.

I do have to curb my language now though as I'm around kids a lot of the time and swearing in front of them would feel wrong.

I do think it's a little pathetic if it's every other word I guess just because it loses all meaning and people who can drop a choice one in and get real impact are much more impressive!

Slag annoys me more I think...or maybe I'm just getting old!

People in general don't like people people swearing, and I'm the same. But sometimes it's hypocritical because I swear sometimes too, but I have some way of doing it so it's "funny" (as people have said) and it goes with the type of humor I have ... or something.

I generally don't swear, but I do when I'm really bothered - in a good way or in a bad way lol. I'm cool with people doing it, as long as they don't do it out of rudeness that is uncalled for.

It's perfectly fine to swear or use slang, since everyone is unique..as much as massive amounts of conflict often occurs when two unique people with alternating opinions meet happens, but still. I generally don't mind swearing so long as it's not done in an abusive matter, and not constant. Example, you'll see me swear every so often but you won't see me conflagrate my post by swearing multiple times in every sentence...nor should you (hopefully) ever see it aimed at anyone else.

Slang is..meh. It's not slang that bothers me, it's accents. If someone has an annoying accent, I'm going to want them to shut up, regardless of the slang they use. If it's a pleasing accent, slang is generally okay. Slang when it's being written down is annoying though, since I always saw slang as a kind of "in build speech filter" of sorts you get hammered into your cranium when you grow up...there's nothing forcing you from typing it down, but there is a mental block making you say it in reality.

Perhaps, anyway. Regardless.

Edited in sudden thought: I actually hate people more who attempt to fake-swear than people who actual swear. There's a guy I watch from time to time on youtube called Necroscope86, and he has a massive habit of avoiding swearing by replacing words like **** (assuming it's not censored) with the word funk, and so on. It's just irritating and I feel like it's defeating the object, since you are basically cursing, only you've replaced an expletive with something stupid.

I don't mind the typical FLIPPIN HECK or HOLY CRAP as opposed to the stronger alternatives, but when it's just a word that has a similar written sense but otherwise is nothing to do with the original it...just grates on me. Dunno why.

I appreciate the thoughts. I was worried my swearing might make me come across as ignorant, but it looks like it's not that serious. Judging by the responses, I guess it's the slang I need to be careful of.

What the frack?

Verily, watch now as Greb takes this crafting implement of unusual size and daydreams happily about applying it into Edward W's cranium.

Cue dreamy, hazy sigh. :)

Huh? Not sure I'm happy with that...

Ah, sorry, I should be using the more modern version, so... "What the frak?"

I like to think SPAM stands for Stupid, Pointless Annoying Message. Let's analyse yours;

"**** is this spam"

Stupid; depends. It's short and doesn't really hold much weight, but is relevant to the topic somewhat and thus can be considered "smart".

Pointless; depends, again. It's relevant to the question based topic and so it's likely not pointless.

Annoying; To me, yes, because it's a four letter reply, kind of meant for chat not message boards. But opinions vary.

Message; It's not long enough to be a message in my opinion, but it does hold a POINT and so, I guess it counts.

3 yay, 1 nay.

Nope, doesn't appear to be spam.

I may be insane, and also wrong, though.

I see. Well, it's closure for me to type and express myself I guess. Also it's +1 to post count, which is cool. Thanks for the acknowledgement regardless, since ignorance tears a bigger hole than erm..acknowledgement, I guess.

IT MEANS I'M WORTH SOMETHING, EVEN IF IT IS ONLY A PASSING GLANCE. :(
