Hi there,

I was wondering what everyone here does for a living?

i am almost finished university and do a bit of casual laboring now and then. im a bit of a bum though i have to try find a professional job now.

I work in a small legal firm as an assistant (I was doing a law course when I took up the job), and I hate it. I'm leaving in January and ideally would like to get a job in a museum or gallery. :)

Currently spending freshman year at a junior college, and I'll be transferring to a university my junior year. I'm not positive, but I think I'll be majoring in psychology.

Well I am a Mechanical Fitter by trade, but I also have an electrical licence. hydraulic and welding experience. At the moment I'm working in a Pump Repair, Swimming Pool and Rain Water Tank Shop.

Still a student for now, graduating in March and going for full-time teacher training next year :)

I work part time in a supermarket/Gas station. I love the job. My workmates are all very friendly, and you get to meet a lot of peole, but I really want something else. I just don't know what I want to do! ^^

I'm still a student (economics), doing my masters in Operations Research (well, trying to finish it while struggling with personal problems)....

I am a 2nd year pharmacy student I work as a pharmacist intern only 2 more years and I will be done.

i'm still in highschool but when
i get out, i hope to be a youth worker
or something like that. :)
that is if i'm sane enough by then.
*fingers crossed*

I work for a medium sized technology company building and repairing call accounting computers. I've been there for around 11 years.

If I've done the math properly, I've built over 5,700 systems...and that's a conservative estimate.

I need a vacation.

I'm a junior in high school.
But *fingers crossed* I'm going to get a lab internship at UCSF this summer. That'll be pretty sweet. Tedious but sweet.

I work in local government and find it to be incredibly interesting, although I'm not sure that I really enjoy my current job (been there about 7 months).

I don't know if anyone can relate, but did you ever get the feeling that you can't get fired from your job, or that it would actually require more of an effort to get fired than to keep your job? While there are a couple different reasons why this may happen, one thing is for sure: it really hurts one's motivation to work.

*This is meant to be an abstract comment/question. I am grateful for my job and am not trying to get fired.*

i can relate... i work as a server at a government owned place. the only way you can get fired there is you swear at a client or something to like that. really all i do, is sit around till the service begins, eat some dessert, serve the clients the food and clear the plates. i get the new people to do all the work i dont want to do but ive been there couple years. but im only this way when im not in a good mood, i try to do a good job for the sake of doing a good job.

oh ya on top of getting lil cash from there, im a nursing student. im so glad i switched outta computer science/mathematics, it was just so dull and boring in that faculty xD *no offense intended to people who are majoring in comp sci or math*

I am a sophomore at a university, I'm majoring in Biology:D, and it keeps me busy, during the summers I work as a dish washer!:(

I am currently jobless and don't do much. I live with my parents and stay home all day and sleep. I am awake during the night mostly. I just watch movies and chainsmoke, nothing more except going on the internet occasionally. I am a 20 year old high school-dropout by the way. I've never had a job either. I'm planning on getting one but everywhere that I apply I seem to get rejected. I have applied in over 30 places and not one of them seems to call me back. Oh well........

You have a better chance if you call them back. Just say "I am calling to follow up on the application i put in" or something to that affect.

As for me, i work as Tech Support for a Fuel Management Company. Its a horrible job with horrible pay. I would quit right this minute if i was confident i would find another job quickly.

Thanks for the advice. Your job sounds difficult and rather tedious according to your description. I wish you the best of luck finding a more satisfying job.

Take care and best wishes.

First job was paper boy
Lawn cutter
House painter
Electricians Assistant
Library Technician
Computer Assistant
Shipper/Receiver
Drug Dealer (pot and hashish in high school)
Landscaper
Roofer
Plummer
Valet
Framer
Drywall Installer
Apprentice Electrician
Electrical Engineer
Electronic Engineer
Power Engineer (specifically boiler operator)
Concrete Technician
Security Guard
Security Supervisor
Data Clerk
File Maintenance Personnel
Owned my own computer repair and servicing shop for a year.
Fisherman
Gas Production Tester

These are just the job titles that I've held for at least a week or more... I want to be a jack of all trades... and I list them all because I'm still not sure what I want to do... I think I'd like to combine my skills to buy, fix up, and resell and rent out houses... that'd be both interesting and rewarding work I think.

Oh, and only the first and last three are in proper order... the rest are not.

I am currently jobless, attending a College for Computer Programming. Only had 3 jobs before:

Busboy, midnight shift merchandiser, and worked in the shipping and receiving part of a small company. None of these jobs ever really lasted more than 4-6 months as they were all mind numbingly boring, so much so that I felt I had to quit.

I'm doing field placement in April (haven't decided where) and depending on how that goes I will either apply to University afterwards (probably either software engineering or Database administration) or just head out into the work force. Honestly right now I'm leaning towards the first option but I'm not sure I want to do another 4 years of schooling...

Not really excited about my future really, cause frankly graduating is the only thing I'm looking forward to and Im a little scared that once that happens it'll just be like "now what". sigh, oh well.

EDIT:

Ya I know how frustrating that is, I must have applied to like 40 different places over the summer and not one of them called me back. It's annoying cause these were all lame positions that anyone can do. I guess someone was more qualified to restock shelves than me lol (I know I know it's stupid but I couldn't help think that)

Just out of curiosity did you guys apply in person?
Did you have an 'in'?

I find jobs are easiest to get if you either know someone that can put a word in for you... this makes a huge difference... or if you go and speak with your potential employer and fellow employees yourself. Speak to people at the place you'd like to work at and ask them questions about the job so you can 'tailor' your resume to the job.

Just a suggestion... most labor jobs are great because if you just show up and hang around while they work, the foreman or whoever in charge may put you to work right there on the spot without a resume or application or anything. Show initiative... I got a framing job, fishing job, and a landscaping job this way as well... I was just there... easier to just give me the job then go looking around for someone else and making phone calls etc.
