Did you have an 'in'?
I find jobs are easiest to get if you either know someone that can put a word in for you... this makes a huge difference... or if you go and speak with your potential employer and fellow employees yourself. Speak to people at the place you'd like to work at and ask them questions about the job so you can 'tailor' your resume to the job.
Just a suggestion... most labor jobs are great because if you just show up and hang around while they work, the foreman or whoever in charge may put you to work right there on the spot without a resume or application or anything. Show initiative... I got a framing job, fishing job, and a landscaping job this way as well.
Those things all require a certian level of confidence and social grace. Neither of which I possess. I don't know anyone anywhere and I apply for all my jobs in person.
usually goes like this: I walk in and ask if they are hiring. If yes I hand them a resume and fill out an application if necessary and If no I just say ok thanks and leave. These methods didn't fail me anywhere else I lived so I didn't really think they would here (I moved) but I guess I was wrong.
