Blogs (god I hate that word...)

Does anyone here have a blog? I've been dithering about starting one for as long as I can remember. I think I'd really like to but I have issues.

Firstly can anyone recommend a site? There seems a lot about and I'm not good with decisions (or am I...) Of course it has to be free and with the ability to add in pictures (maybe they all do that?). I'd also be looking for somewhere that was easy to use as well as quite simple by which I mean my comp / browser are both old and I don't want somewhere thats going to take an age to load. On this point yeap I know I could do with upgrading and updating both!

Secondly and I think this is whats put me off the most so far. If you have one does anyone ever read it or comment on what you've said? I know I tell myself I'd be doing it mostly for me, which is true I would but I know I'd feel a bit silly if I never got any reactions what so ever to what I was saying. The few blogs I've stumbled across tend to be largely ignored. I think this might make me feel a bit disheartened and silly. I'd feel like I was talking to myself. I mean I might as well be typing it in word documents or something if no one is ever going to at least read it.

Hmm while we are on the subject I've always hated the word "blog" its just plain ugly and I couldn't work out where it even came from. Just googled it and its a blend of the term web log apparently (you probably knew this...) I guess that makes sense. Its silly a damn ugly word though.

But you said a bad word a bad bad word. I hate tumblr! Mostly because my photos used to end up on what can only be described as porn blogs there. Not nice, not nice at all.

Thanks for the rec. I did think about using the diary section here but it might be something that I would show to people that I wouldn't want coming here. Not because I'm ashamed but I can speak freely here in a way I couldn't if I thought certain people might see it.

Thanks for the info. I bet I end up going for one of those two because they are pretty much the two I've heard around the most. As for comments, I'm not obsessed with being super popular it just might be nice if at least one person I don't know or haven't told about it said something... :shy:

I love blogger, its great, I've used it for years. Also tumblr.

If you are gonna have more text than images, I recommend Blogger. If it's the other way around, tumblr is the way to go. It's very visual.

I have a blogger. Haven't written in it for quite a while.

I used it to screw Google Adsense out of some money a while back. But then they caught onto my scheme so I ditched the blog. lol

I use wordpress because it pretty much has everything I need, upload pictures, choose a template, it has a comments section (need to disable the approval if you want to let people comment without you approving every one of it, it's kind of an antispam measure) also gives you gigabytes of space (I mostly upload pictures), as far as traffic goes, like minus said, it depend on the contents, mine pretty much have like 1 visit every once in a while, lol, but I mostly did it for myself to keep track of my progress.

Well the thing about many blog sites is that unless you get good word out about it, it'll remain ignored for a while. This means linking to your friends, having them favorite/like it, show it to other people, putting in tags that are unique to your blog, putting your blog in online lists, etc.
I've had a **** ton of blogs, all of which I've closed because I have the attention span of a flea with alzheimer's, but I do remember using blog lists to get some good circulation going. Nowadays with facebook and whatnot, you can get word out with just a click of a button.

I am using wordpress (wordpress.org) for my blog. I always liked the interface and found it rather intuitive, especially since it is highly customiseable when you are running it on your own webspace.
If you are looking for a hosted service and want thew interface you can use their own bloghosting service (wordpress.com). The basic service is very reliable and always up to date and comes with good features in the free version and its adfree. If you want more features, you can get them for quite a decent price.

the thing with wordpress is... that I look at it and it bores me a lot, the interface, the desing, the templates bore me to death. Sorry WP lovers but that's what it makes me feel... Also, I'm not sure but I think morer ppl visit you in blogger.

I use Wordpress on a site to update the front page and post stuff. It's been hacked several times over the past year...security isn't the best in my opinion. It wasn't just the site I'm a mod on either, it was several Wordpress users that got hacked.

Thanks, thats all really good advice. I was thinking about linking to it and stuff but I didn't know about blog lists and things.

I know I'm coming in really late here, but I use WordPress and find it pretty easy to use, and fairly intuitive.

Bloglists are just a matter of going into a certain setting, deleting the default names they have there, and typing in new ones.
Also pretty good for search engine results - I do a bit of writing, and reviews/analyses of TV programmes - there's a part on the dashboard that lets you know how people came to your blog, and there's quite a few where a search for 'review _tv programme_' has found my blog on the first page of results - and that's despite me being pretty new, and only getting a small number of views most days.
