To satisfy my curiosity, I've always wondered how familiar Americans are with the more British elements of the UK's culture so was wondering how familiar people were of these stateside (its all bands shows etc I liked basically :) )?

Joy Division
Stone Roses
The Smiths
Oasis
Red Dwarf
Blackadder
Pheonix Nights
Doctor Who
Eddie Izzard
Stephen Fry

Have you heard of them, are they generally well known or just known to a few people?

I'm not American sorry but take out Doctor Who and I like or love all those things. Doesn't really answer you're question though I know. :shy:

I would guess at least some of those things are known or liked in the states.

The Smiths
Dr WHo
Blackadder

lol, that's it for me. :p

From your list I enjoy Stephen Fry, Eddie Izzard (Cake or death?), Blackadder, Oasis (particularly What's The Story Morning Glory), The Smiths, and Red Dwarf.

Not on your list, but I also enjoy BBC News, Top Gear, Monty Python, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and many other products of British culture that are currently slipping my mind.

Thanks all,

I know its an odd question its just something I've always wondered about. Pleased to see The Smiths mentioned, they are the epitome of Englishness for me (in particular the north of England), so I wondered if anyone else would really appreciate them outside these shores :) :)

For all its *****-ness, I like to think this little island punches well above its weight at times.

Some familiarity with them all except Phoenix Nights. Stephen Fry made irregular TV appearances on the American show Bones. Red Dwarf and Doctor Who plays on public TV along with Doc Martin, Are You Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances, To the Manor Born and a number of other british shows. I watch the BBC news when i can.

Do you guys get BBC iPlayer over there?

BBC iPlayer is only available in the UK.

Yeah it told me once it wouldn't work because I was outside the UK. Funny thing is I could have sworn I was sat in a house just outside Manchester and weirdly it had worked the night before...:p
