I'm Elterrifico. I'm not Spanish but like the Flintstones. I'm a 43 year old Canadian man who has been living and working in the People's Republic of China for the last seven years. I used to live at King and Dufferin in Toronto and, at times, was lonely there. I hold a Master's Degree in Religious Studies and one of the classes I taught at the university level in Canada was "Personal Presence and Loneliness".
After struggling in Toronto for many years (I am originally from Hamilton), I took what I thought would be a temporary teaching job in the People's Republic of China and I've been here ever since -- seven plus years and counting. I am very lucky to have found good and caring people here in China and my friends and family in Canada have gone out of their way to make sure I am not lonely here. They call and write to me more often than they did when I was living in the same city with them. I also married a terrific Chinese girl who really knows the score.
Part of my job here in China is to send Chinese students to Toronto for their high school study. One boy, his name is Meng, is eighteen years old. He has no friends nor family members in Toronto. He fears he will be lonely there. He does not need a custodian (guardian) in Toronto as he is of legal age. He does, however, need a contact person and is willing to pay $1,000 to anybody in Toronto who could become his friend. He needs some support with understanding his timetable at school and he needs somebody to write (in English -- it will be translated by our office here in China) to his parents a couple of times a year to tell them how he is doing. He would like somebody to check in on him, by phone, once in a while. I have many stories I could tell about lonely Chinese students in Toronto but don't feel that this is the correct forum for me to do so.
I've been trying to find a friend for Meng for two weeks now and haven't found any takers. My friends and family members are busy with their own lives. Others I know are on social services and do not want to risk losing their benefits if they accept outside sources of income. Still others don't care. Alas, I did an Internet based search and arrived at this forum to see if anybody here might be interested. Meng won't care how you look or sound. All he wants is somebody to show him some kindness.
Should you be interested, you may contact me here or at [email protected]. When you do, I'd be happy to share more of my experiences and maybe we could become friends. So there you have it, a two-for-one special and a thousand bucks thrown in for good measure. I am not using my real name in this forum in order to protect my student but assure you that this is a real and true offer.
Regards from China,
Elterrifico
