I'm currently looking to purchase my first car, as I'll be going away to college in the fall. I have drove around the family Mountaineer, and the car is a gas guzzler! I want to buy a car that's good on gas, and decent looking. Any tips on what type of car I should invest in? I have saved up $7,000 for one.

What sort of area will you be driving in?

I drive an '04 Chevy Tracker. You get a decent 23 mpg, it's a full frame mini-SUV so it's not huge but it's not going to fall apart like a unibody if you tap it with a feather.

It's 4WD and has some clearance underneath it, so it's good for areas like mine where there's lots of snow in the winter and you ocassionally want to go do some light off-roading (re: trying to leave your driveway in the spring :p)

My brother just got a PT Cruiser. It's a nice car. I plan to get one myself.

If you don't have to worry about power then just go for an old (95 and up) Toyota. Camry, Corolla, Avalon, or something like that. They are good on gas and are easy to maintain.

Yeah, toyotas are basically indestructible. My dad has a 90-something Tacoma pickup that gets about 25mpg and has 200-something thousand miles on it. It's only ever had routine maintenance...changed the starter out once, front brakes, oil and the like.

just pop some 22" rims on it :p

Shame on you, wanting to ruin a perfectly decent pickup with pansy tires!

Here is an S10 in it's proper environment, away from your scary low-rider torments, free as a wee birdy:
