I guess it depends on how tactile the person is. Some people ARE happy to cuddle up to someone they're friendly with without needing any other emotional involvement. Most aren't. Having said that, if she's been doing 'a whole bunch of intimate things' then I'd suggest it's more than that. I think you were unlucky and got one of those people that either doesn't know what they want and so manage to give out a bunch of mixed signals or is happy to use to someone to fulfill a temporary need but is unwilling to commit to anything more.

Don't let that put you off. Your instincts are probably right most of the time. It's the few times that they're wrong that can cause the doubts to emerge. A girl that smiles at you may or may not be interested. A girl that actively tries to talk to you, smiles etc *is* probably interested. You should be able to tell from a few conversations, just from the way she looks at you. Probably. I've not exactly been on that end of things.

Good for you on being able to accept the money from a neighbour. People need the ritual of thanking, giving something back, in order to feel ok about taking what you give them. I can understand that. I can't take from people either.

Which reminds me...about the rep thing? Don't worry about it. Please. Don't.
