In my country it's pretty much the opposite. Telling the truth is the worst you can do when talking to psychiatrists and psychologists. To get the right treatment (Medication) you need to play a role and lie. All experienced patients know that and coach newbies how to do it - I received such a coaching as well after struggling for years. Nobody asks you how you feel. Ever. Patient records are very limited - you can have therapy sessions for ten years and your entire record will fit on three pages. There is no supervision, no quality control, no double checks. Treatment is very outdated as well. The upside is that it's a lot cheaper than in the US ("Universal healthcare"). You know the saying: If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

So the inmates are running the asylum.

Pray tell, what treatment does one get if they tell the truth? What lies need to be told to get the “right” treatment?

It's not like they're crazy, our healthcare system has just a different function. It's all about public relations, justifying the high taxes - and softly nuging patients towards additional (private) health insurances. You can either get an appointment for tumor surgery in 2-3 years for "free" ("Universal healthcare!" - but only if you're not too old) or in three months which costs a lot more. You can get a fake psychotherapy for "free" (With the diagnose and treatment coming from the personal catalog of the expert regardless of the patients issues) or a real diagnose and therapy if you're willing to pay those 150+ bucks per hour (on average). It's like the conservative's dream wrapped in a shiny socialist foil for disguise. That's the European way, baby!

The trick is to use some sort of reverse psychology. You need to act like you're refusing to think that anything could be wrong with your psyche, it must be something with your body, traumas don't exist and everything is fine because you're not a pussy, it's just the weather and that old injury that never healed properly and you want sleeping pills because of the stress in your job. This is the only way to get actual antidepressants (for example). Act like you're from the 1950s.
