Grammar Misuses

Okay I usually don't do this but it is almost 4:30 am here, I can't go back to sleep.

Has anyone else noticed how bad people's grammar is anymore? I'm not a saint when it comes to grammar, not at all, I'll probably have grammatical mistakes in this post. But I have noticed how bad a lot of people are. I used to work for someone who would correct me all of the time, it was kind of annoying. Now though I notice it with people in person and even on TV. Like the use of good and well, that is misused so often it is mind blowing. I deal with people everyday where most will say good instead of well, repeatedly. I never say anything because I don't want to be rude. It's young and old too, all generations. Just like me and I, which can be confusing which one to use sometimes. Or like referring to yourself and another person where you put yourself first, no it is the person and I (or me sometimes) not me and the person.

Just today one of my coworkers used GOOD where he should have used WELL and did it several times in a row while talking to a customer, and the customer did it too. I was going bonkers in my head but I never said anything because I know how annoying it is when people do that to you. I correct my mother because it is fun and funny to do, she's bad at using good instead of well too. My old boss and his constant corrections fixed that so now I notice it all of the time. Even when I'm watching TV, especially Family Feud with Steve Harvey, he is horrible for misusing GOOD, sometimes he is correct and says "you played well" but most of the time he uses good.

I blame schools and society in general, we get so caught up in slang and emojis we forget the basics. It might not seem like a big deal but when you talk to someone who uses proper grammar, even if you don't notice, it feels like you are having a deeper, richer conversation with someone.

I shouldn't be posting on my chrome book, the freaking thing has no delete button!! You have to use the backspace key, so annoying, and the keyboard makes louder clickity clack sounds. I should have used my laptop but this thing has app games on it. I hope I don't wake anyone up. I've already heard someone get up to use the washroom. I tried to type softer but that means I have to type slower and that's not how I type. I'm not a hunt and pecker type of keyboard user. I told a guy at work he's a hunt and pecker and he replied "what did you call me?" He didn't know that is the term used for someone who uses only a couple of fingers to type and looks at the keyboard while doing it. It's now 5 am...ugh time to stop proof reading.

I think technology is a lot to blame because it's so easy to type gibberish and it'll just correct everything. I've noticed my spelling has got worse in the last 10 years, and it's definitely down to devices. On the contrary, I think you learn properly in schools but then spelling (and grammar) is slowly taken away by the dependence on technology.

Lol people in work do this too. "Running good" in stead of "Running well".

It's people's hand writing that gets me - I don't expect everyone to have perfect writing, but as adults you'd expect it to be kind of legible. My work involves a lot of paperwork, and 80% of people's writing I can barely understand, it's like a child has written it.

I have that problem at work too with hand writing, mine is not the best but one of the mechanics at work you need a cypher for. I'm starting to figure it out though. He still uses cursive too. I print because my cursive is horrible. Some of them with their grammar is bad so when I type up the invoices I reword it instead of using exactly what they wrote. One of the guys noticed and asked me why I changed it, I told him I was just trying to word it so it looked more technical. Plus there was one comment on the paper work I was not going to type...the customer would have been pissed. LOL!!

Would it surprise anyone if I said I notice everyone's mistakes? Yeah, I do. I used to correct EVERYTHING. I've learned to only correct the ones that really annoy me and half the time I'm not even aware I correct until after it comes out, it's just involuntary. lol

One of my friends was really bad, she was horrible. I would correct her all the time. She would get so annoyed with me, but now she actually goes out of her way to thank me because she's more well spoken than she was.

I’m one of those dreaded grammar Nazis - beware! But, yes, I blame technology and our dependence on quick forms of communication. Plus as a society, many people just don’t seem to care about proper grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation - a visit to any social media page will prove that point. Another irony: most, if not all devices these days, come equipped with spell-checker and grammar apps that will either automatically correct your writing or offer suggestions, yet people STILL make so many atrocious mistakes online. Sure, you can turn those options off, but why would you? You only end up looking like an uneducated twit.

Grammar correcting is elementary school elitism. I'd rather just figure out what they mean. Knowledge isn't linear and grammar isn't a particularly deep subject. You're literally judging someone for not knowing 1 thing you do.

My grammar us rubbish, I own it and try to learn when I can and it sticks. My peeve is a colleague doesn't use capital letters in addresses, I think it looks do unprofessional when sending letters out. She isn't the type of person to take constructive criticism well. Someone tried once for something else and she claimed she was being picked on.

I notice it in my native language. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, it's getting worse and it's very annoying when it's an official letter or a post or an article somewhere. I think that one can make mistakes untill it's a profession, if you're want to be in TV or to post for more 100+ ppl - so do learn a few rules. And especially if a person is a teacher, I think it's unacceptable for a teacher speaking a spelling wrong (I don't mean the misprints of course, everyone can make a mistake once in a while).

But my own English is miserable, sorry, I do my best.

My biggest peeves are subjective-verb agreement and the misuse of verb tenses. Punctuation is my major misuse. I am the queen of the comma splice. When speaking to someone this is not that much of an issue and I rarely write anything that garners that much attention so I pop them in just about anywhere.if that makes me sound uneducated I don't really care. I'm a college graduate, got into graduate school, didn't see the point in continuing after a year and quit. The only person I would ever correct is my son and it's usually about enunciation and subject-verb agreement. That being said I do welcome all constructive criticism.

I don't condone the grammar fixing in an argument. THAT is when it becomes "elementary school elitism." It usually only occurs when they know they've lost the argument.

I was a teacher for years. You get a fair share of eye rolls and sighs after doing your job. I just avoid correcting people because of that.

As I was going through school I kept learning new words and enjoyed using them. Every day we would randomly pick words from dictionaries and memorize them along with their meaning. I had quite a large vocabulary. Then I took a bunch of communication courses in college and learned the value of speaking clear and simple. I ditched all the big words and even started throwing in a bunch of slang. People were less put off my me. Now, I don't really care. Whatever comes out comes out.

He told me that after lunch for 20 minutes they could choose any book from the classroom to read or look at. He told me that my son kept choosing the Dictionary. I was baffled and asked him what the problem was. He told me he found it odd. I said is that a problem? He said then yes he should be reading a story. I told him I thought they could look at any of the books and what did my son do with it? He said that when he asked him what he was doing my son told him he was looking up new words. I said again why is this a problem. He didn't answer and just asked me to talk to him at home. Also bear in mind they already had a reading book and a library book with them separate to this .

I thought it was just us non-native speakers who had that issue.
So many of my colleagues have no clue as to when to use "a" or "an", "good" or "well", "your" or "you're", "of course" or "off course" etc.
Another mistake I hear all the time is constructions such as "I have went".
I just try to not be annoyed by it.

I notice that my own use of grammar and spelling has deteriorated a bit because of the influence of other languages.

Some teachers fail to understand that not all children are the cookie cuts. Instead of viewing an anomaly as wrong, teachers should encourage inquisitiveness and challenge children. He probably should've been in a gifted program. Districts start testing in 1st grade in my area.
