Love is an emotional state, perhaps easier to detect and believe in when it is absent. If you are alone and without it you yearn for a return to that emotional state. Just as we have sexual urges to encourage reproduction, I think we have emotional urges to bond with a mate and love them beyond that act of reproduction. Many people say we're not supposed to be monogamous because we're animals but many animals mate for life, I think that's a lame excuse to be honest. The gestation and development of a child takes a long time, far longer than most mammals before the child is independent. I think just as sexual attraction is nature's way of producing a child, I think Love is nature's way of developing a bond that will solidify that union into something lasting that will give the child the best chance of survival. There is a parental bond even within animals who are not conscious of their own emotional state, if a mother loses her child its highly distressing, its something innate. I see that as love and I see love between adults as all part of that process. Even if you don't want kids, you're still subject to those innate emotional and sexual desires and I think that's where they stem from.
