well i usually just read whatever is popular:

Twilight, Harry Potter, The DaVinci Code (I've read all of Dan Brown's works) and then anything by those authors. I also want to read The Hunger Games and the Song of Ice and Fire series.

i've done considerable damage on the horror genre, reading all of Edgar Allan Poe's works and a ton of H.P. Lovecraft works. I am always looking for figures in that genre which later writers in that genre were inspired by and built upon. It's like watching a natural progression of an art form. :D

Currently I am reading all of Dean Koontz's novels and have been since i was 16 and i plan to do the same with Stephen King's works.

I am very well read in the Green Lantern mythos (over 30 books on the green lantern i've read).

hmm, i also went through a classical literature reading phase which is not yet over.

I always have a dictionary close by or google, so I can look up anything which puzzles me in a book or words I don't understand.

If you want to know what I've read the past 6 years just take a look at this online list i've created. :)

The only thing I check for is if the book's written in a language I can understand.

If I have to time to read, then I basically read anything that's nearby.

I heard the Song of Ice and Fire series is awesome. We own a box-set of the series but we never open the wrapping of sets.

Figurines can go costing a lot of money, but they can be well worth buying if the quality is good and you really enjoy the origin. I'd like to buy figurines myself of anime/fantasy/game characters, but I need to get some steady income first....

Oh, you use librarything.com. How do you like it? As I've mentioned before, I use Shelfari but I'm still early in listing all the books I've read so I'm looking to see if there are any better online book lists out there.

I'm normally the complete opposite myself. I always have been about everything...

My mum reads anything and everything just continually. The minute she finishes something shes looking for a new one to start. I honestly don't think thats a good thing. You have to have some level of quality control. I think she does it so she doesn't have to talk to my dad...

I never bought any figurines, they all looked cheap to me. :(

Librarything.com...i get t he feeling it's more frequented by intellectual readers than anything? Just my feeling though. I've never used shelfari. I really like Librarything though. you have to pay 10 bucks a year once you pass 200 books, but you can buy a lifetime membership there for 25 bucks. it's worth it. i love posting in groups there, they have an awesome group for horror fans. i like posting threads in that group asking questions as bout the horror genre so I can learn more about it. :D

C-c-check it out!

Oh and they have a HUGE HUGE group for fantasy fans there. Larger than the horror group. o.o

I also enjoy frequenting fan forums for certain books so I can talk about them while I am reading them. It makes for a more interesting reading experience, plus I can share my love of reading with the members there. One of the fantasy series that I am currently in love with is the abarat series by Clive barker. Here's a small forum of people dedicated to that series:

The forum is dark, i know, but i'm so obsessed with the series it hardly seems to matter. :D

Well, i read popular books so that I have something in common with other people. like i can say

"hey have you read ___ series?"

"Oh yeah me too!"

"did you like the part where..."

You know, conversation starter. :) Something to have in common with other people, a shared experience.

That's why I do it.

Yeah this is why I've said before that my liking of being different or stuff has backfired really. :(

It must be interesting to read books in one genre and watch its development. I stopped on Poe :(

Your list is fascinating. However, I'm afraid you are to harsh on my E. Dickinson, you've just killed me with Yorkshire Terriers (how someone can read such books :) and you don't like the Grimm's Tales :( Fortunately, we both like Crime and Punishment, so you're saved from my wrath.

I have no confidence to join any fan forum, although it must be nice to have someone to share thoughts on books

I do the same if I have no choice

Oh I just mean she will read anything even if she says herself that its utter rubbish. What is the point of that? I mean she reads so much she could have read so many great works of fiction yet there she is reading crappy free romance books. Plus I pretty much don't care if that makes me sound like a snob. I mean I could cry when I go in my local book shop 100s of copies of Twilight and only one shelf of poetry...

Well, I know it a bit from the other side of a counter, and you have to do really awful things to get your bookstore going. It's so sad.

Actually, I wanted to know according to which criteria you discriminate between books.

Well it is a Waterstones so its not exactly a struggling independent. We used to have one of those in what used to be a cinema. That was the best even if one guy who worked there was a total git. Its now a posh furniture shop I've never ever seen one person in.

Oh well I guess I'm talking about quality of writing and subject matter maybe.

Thank you, annik

I try not to let the cover persuade me..for obvious reasons.. but I like mysteries, murder mysteries in particular.

I look for something familiar, that I know I might like. Nothing like buying a book and then it sucking. I like action adventure so I stick to those. Most of the books I have bought were Batman, Indiana Jones, and recently Assassin's Creed. Those are paper back novels too with NO pictures. Or novels based on movies I liked.
