Not sure what I want to do with it.

I used to host a home server. All my stuff was on it. Think of it as a storage locker for the web. I could securely store any information and get to it anytime.

I don't have that confidence with an online host. Mine has 4000 employees. Do you really think none of them snoop?

But, I can do anything I want.

I've had my own forums before. I might do that...except no one is interested in my interests.

I like my smiles. I can put them there and use them anywhere.

Pictures. If they are on the site they can be posted anywhere without limits.

I could start a blog. Been there. Not a lot of viewers.

I've thought about online games. No not a WarCraft clone. I used to have an Intellivision when they were new. I liked those games. I am capable of replicating them... but I'm not yet proficient in the web languages. I'm working on it.

I've designed games. I wrote a few to about 90% complete. But they don't make Commodore64 anymore. I'd have to program from scratch, but the games are still in my head.

I write a lot. I could post my stories. All I have to do is finish some.

I'm sure there are open source social media platforms. Like we need another one of those.

Chat room? I wrote a simple one once. I still have the code but I'd have to make it less simple.

I've always wanted to write a chat bot. But if I wrote it and used it wouldn't I just be talking to myself?

I had an idea for a wishing site. I wish I knew how to make that work.

I could video stream my shop. Not that anything is happening there.

Kitty pictures. Ha. Lots of those around.

I can actually do all of the above. It's the Internet. Anything that can be coded can be served.

****!! Na. I don't care what others think of me but I'd like to retain a little self respect.

I don't know. What would you do with your own website?

I too hosted my own server at my house back when Cox first came out with high speed Interent. I basically had my own T1 line with nobody else sharing it. Try that nowadays. Hell Cox quit allowing home hosting a couple decades ago do to bandwith usage. I had all kinds of different websites. A popular one was a graphics sharing website. I also had a secure email service way before anybody thought secure email was needed. However, none of them took off. I saw many awesome website and partnered with a few of them doing different things. But, quality didn't matter. All that mattered was popularity. I was hosting other sites long before Godaddy was around. But, they advertised the hell out of it. And, that's the only reason they became what they are today. Their service has always sucked and their prices have always been high. Now, nearly all the quality little guys are out of the business. I gave up doing all that because of the cost and frustrations with dealing with hosting services and domain name registers.

But, back to your question. Do you want a popular site? Or a specialty site? It's a lot of effort so you have to find something you really enjoy. Or, you have to make your site dynamic. It's always got to offer something new or people will stop visiting it.

I hope you enjoy it.

I'm just kicking around ideas. I have a few information needs. I've gone through this before. I used specific domain names related to a specific purpose. If it failed I scrapped the name.

This time I went generic. I'll rely on sub domains to manage traffic. My intention is to just keep it and use it for all my failures experiments. If something works out I'll deal with it then.

I've got the site for a year for $12. Right now it's just a toy. Cheaper than buying a video game and a lot more educational.

I'd still rather have a home server, but since the last move none have worked reliably. Same equipment except for the %&&**^%$#^& router that came with the Internet service. I'm not sure why it barfs so much. It doesn't play nice with the port forwarding.

Godaddy sucked. Everything was an extra fee. Pushy sales out the... They sucked for 2 years until I dumped them. I use ionos.com. Their introductory offers are hard to beat. The service has been fine for the two years I've played with them. I do what I want and they leave me alone.

Probably just write about topics that interest me.
- Ayurvedic Medicine/Diet
- Buddhism
- More Diet talk..
- How the world sucks..
- Excerise/Fasting
- Whatever I am reading atm - write about it and give my take on it/ try to help others
- Cats..
...and well..
-Cats again

Cats? Can't have enough cats. Wait...

You sound like a blogger at heart. Blogging is fun if there are those that take to you. You have to have the encouragement. I had a medical related blog. I have so many medical issues, researching them should have made me an honorary doctor. It was just an off the shelf bloggspot.

I ran a blog on my home server, just about DIY and mechanical stuff. But with a home server everything is right there locally. It's fast and easy to make changes. No need to sign in or use FTP. When you write it its served. I put a lot of effort into how that one looked. I coded everything myself. I do things. I like to show others how to do things. I don't think there are many that do their own things any more.

Does anyone want to know how to make a decentralized septic tank last for life with little to no servicing? Yeah. Didn't think so.

Maybe I'll put that on the site under trivia.

The thing about any of that stuff is you have to have the exposure. I didn't. Not sure I know how now.

Sounds right up my alley :) I would have read that for sure... have you ever read any Bernarr McFadden? His books were a treasure trove of useful diet/medical information..

Not if it wasn't abridged and online. :D I am a very lazy reader.

Medicine does fascinate me. Especially the brain.

Oh, by the way. The site is finally accessible. I had a few issues. All fixed.

I think first I'll set up my own smilies so I can click them there and insert them here (or anywhere).

I don't have my smilies particularly accessible yet. Still having "permission" issues. "Hey! It's me!"

I was very interested in my younger days at making websites. But during my 1 year in college i had a very awful teacher who put me off the idea completely. He taught me web design/pc repair and he was just a ********:).

I have been shopping blog scripts. I've even looked into social media scripts. If you are the only one on your social media... it's a blog.

I found one to try but I'm not going to spend hours of effort to get it to run even before I can see it. It came up with beaucoup errors.

I've run into several others that had you register before seeing it, or using it. It's like, "There is movie playing here. We are not going to tell you what it is. Would you like to buy a ticket?" Grab bag software.

I wrote a blog years ago and served it online from home. The front end worked. It looked great. I never got to back end... all the stuff that makes it easy. I had to abandon it due to relocation.

I was hoping to skip any major programming and find a turn key solution... mainly because I have to extensively research every damned sub routine I write. It's a long process for me to get my code to work.

My host has stricter access rules than my last host. HA! My home server didn't have any. That's the way I like it. Keep it simple 'cuz no one gives a **** about hacking little ol' me. If I get anywhere, then implement security.

I'll have to create everything on the home server and then copy it to the host. No big deal. Just another step in the process.

Yeah, I tried using other's scripts but found lots of problems with them and they had a lot of get user's information, my hosting information, and other information they could and send it back home to the script writer. So, I never used any.

I wrote my own stuff using PHP with MySql. Security was my main focus. That's how I learned how easy it was to hack sites. But, I got tired of having so many versions especially when cell phones with different screen sizes came into play.

IMO, it's just best to find well established and popular open source solutions. You won't get exactly what you want. But, it's easy and hosting services are usually more agreeable to using them. Hell, your hosting service might already have something setup that you can use. Blogs are quite common. Then they'll fully support it too.

But, if not, then yeah, absolutely test everything on your home server. When it works great upload it to the server and test it again. I also had duplicate sites so I could switch to the other one while I was working on the main one. If something didn't work I could fix it before implementing it.

It all so much work. Ha! ha!

I've not yet had time to understand Sql. I use text files as data storage. Not that I have that much data. A place like this could never have its searches without sql. I get that. My stuff is more linear and concurrent. I've used MyBB for my forums. The install does the hard work. My interests just don't have that much appeal. None are in operation any more.

I'm having a hard time finding real stand alone software. They say it's open source and free but then it requires you to make an account and allow data exchange. I just want something that is me, no outside interference.

oh well. Like I said. It's just for me to power my own cloud.

I spent yesterday AM refreshing my knowledge of html tags. I actually found some useful tags I didn't know. I made note of the tags that would help with building a blog interface.

I examined many blog templates. PFFfffff. People use those?

I built a post editor for my last site. It just dropped posts into a stack, most recent at the top of the page. I should be able to tweak it to structure pages more like... IDK... howtogeek.com comes to mind. Articles more so than just posts.

I've played with those WYSIWYG editors... TinyMCE and CKEditor. Really overblown. They get so complicated that the end production can suffer.

I dabble in php. I've been pretty successful at finding code examples and tweaking it to suit me. I'll never write php code from scratch. That takes wit! 😜

Javascript and I are pretty much strangers. But there is so much code out there it's usually just another tweak.

I'm really more of a Commodore BASIC kind of programmer.

I'll code the blog first. It will give me a place to say what I REALLY think. It's therapeutic to shout out sometimes. I need all the therapy I can get.

I have one more idea for a site. I use to design toys. It was a lot of fun. One was a wooden glider in direct competition to Gullow's little slip together "nickle gliders" that are now many dollars each. Instead of a short loop and dip flight, mine would launch straight, level itself at about 100 feet and glide on the low thermals.

It was a slip together like Gullow's, but had a plastic part I couldn't make. That might not be the case now.

So maybe a store for toy planes. Later, after the blog. If I can manage to get around that plastic part. I can die cut the other parts. But I have to find the time for it.

I tried many WYSIWYG editors. But, I always came back to Front Page 2000. It's like the old programs that actually worked, easy to work with, and intuitive. I even have a PHP add on for it. But, it doesn't know what the hell CSS is. But, I'm not a fan of that anyway. If you are interested maybe we can find a way to get a copy to you. Let me know.

I'll look into Front Page. There are so many alternatives now. One of my browsers, SeaMonkey, based on Mozilla Firefox, is a suite for web builders. It has a composer built into the browser. It's sort of cool, but then it's best to clean up their code before practical use. I see that in a lot of these site builders.

My preference is manual coding. Learn as you go, and none of that extraneous code.

I'm curious about your wishing site idea.

but if you don't have one specific thing you want to do with it... why not just make it a sort of portfolio of all your different projects.
That way you don't have to pick you can just put whatever you want on there.
