I don't understand that, and being different in TODAY'S society is kinda a good thing.

When I was in high school I thought that it was ironic that the self-styled "nonconformists" all looked the same, so really, how did they not conform? They just chose different norms to run to. Still, they were being told what was an acceptable sort of "different."

On the other hand, I was a preppy-dressing, punk-loving, headbanging, classically trained singer & pianist. People looked at me in my penny loafers (with real pennies in them!!) and white button-down oxford ***** and thought "She's so Connecticut." I felt acutely "different" though. Still do. I look pretty normal, but I still feel markedly abnormal.

In retrospect, I am glad I stayed true to myself and did my own thing.
