I'd get that if it wasn't him approaching me in the first place. He's all for talking about me, but apparently talking about his weekend with his family is a taboo for someone without kids.

Sounds like he wants to live vicariously through you - remember what it's like to be single and without children. I'm not saying that's right. Both people should benefit from a friendship. Maybe if you emphasize that you envy what he has, he'll open up about family life.
