Columbine High School - 13 killed, many more injured.
Virginia Tech - 32 dead
And just yesterday, Chardon High School - 3 dead

Why do they happen?

They happen because of bullying, mental instability, and not a clear understanding by the people who run the school (principals, society, etc.)

I was extensively bullied in high school. I was considered by many to be a freak, and some people were scared of me. I gradually became popular in my last two years of high school, but still was considered "weird."

If I didn't have music to fall back on (the reason I became cool was because of my music; I even got a song I wrote played over the broadcast system during morning announcements, I was advertising t shirts), I probably would have still been an outcast. I know how to shoot a gun, learned it in boy scouts, but would never kill anyone. And I hate guns, anyway. However, I am not everyone, and some people just have that line blurred by video games or what have you, and end up shooting people.

Sociopaths can be teenagers, too. And for every school shooting, there is an isolated incident like that gym shooter 3 years ago. George Sodini. Some people are sick, twisted, and demented.

I personally wouldn't kill, much more fun to deprive of food/water, and water board them lol.

Seriously now, the guy who did the shootings yesterday came from a broken family, could also be a cause right?

From what I heard on the news, there were drugs involved (the kid bought what he THOUGHT was drugs and it turned out to be something else)

But aside from the 2 that have already died, there are still 3 others injured

Something was said in an article that he was a person who would bottle up his emotions, and that was his way of releasing them I guess. Apparently he was teased for being "goth".

I don't think America's gun laws help. Is it true you can walk into a wall mart and buy a gun over the counter? You just can't buy guns in the uk, no one has them aside from I guess people who hold valid licences to have them for sport purposes. Its a constitutional right in the US isn't it to? But do many people actually chose to have a gun at home? Its a crime in this country to be carrying a knife and likely to become a serious crime in future.

Shotgun, yes. (with an easy as hell to pass 2 second background check) Handgun, no (unless it's a bb gun)

I was teased for having long hair, and I hung out with goths. None of us went on a shooting rampage.

It reminds me of the silly argument that all Marilyn Manson/NIN/Tool/whatever band fans are raving psychopaths. For the record, I love all three of those bands, and I am not a violent person.

I remember walking into an Iron Maiden concert last year, not knowing what to expect. And realizing it was like a bunch of hippies...just with tattoes.

Anyway, clearly there was something wrong here. If he wasn't being bullied, he has a mental illness that went untreated. If he doesn't have either one of those things, he's being physically abused at home. Something set this kid off.

O.O Muse you learned how to shoot a gun in boy scouts? WTF???

School shootings are a sad factor of what can happen when people are pushed too far.

I take it your boy scouts don't do that. From what little i have seen locally, while they do some shooting it was rather minimal. Maybe they have a program that offers training that what i have seen.

No they don't.

That's a good question. Some can only be driven so far before they snap. Maybe they feel as though nobody cares about how much pain they are truly in, and dismiss it as part of life unaware of just how serious it is.

What do kids do with all of their guns then, just hunting and range shooting?

Yes, that's about it. But most kids don't have guns unless their parents have them. We have stricter gun laws here. Around here, if you are young and own a gun people will scream child abuse. Seriously, it is really uncommon in my area.

Target shooting, yes.

I don't know if they take boy scouts to target ranges anymore. What with the scare over guns and safety laws.

Question: Why is it always the "outgoing, smart, and funny" people who get shot, while it is the "quiet" people who do the shooting? (It's the media saying that!)

I'd ask a better question:

Why are all the outgoing, smart, and funny people who go crazy and shoot the outcasts not mentioned as much?

As an introvert and someone who's been an outcast, this has gotten on my nerves since Columbine.
