As sad and disgusting as these cases may be, they aren't uncommon. The teacher did get bribed, in a sense, altough not directly. All American judges are controlled, wether they realise it or not. It is possible that the teacher was a well respected member of the community. Perhaps the school is influental and didn't want to lose a teacher. All possibilities.
