Science fiction makes it believable that we could jump in and out of warp speed instantly.

The reality is if, while traveling at light speed, you began stopping for your destination a whole two years ahead of time, the force on your internal organs would be the equivalent of repeatedly hitting a brick wall at 60 miles per hour continuously for the entire two years.

You likely wouldn't survive for five seconds.

Mail was once delivered by 37 cats in Belgium.

These domestic cats were trained to deliver mail in the city of Liège. Waterproof bags containing letters were tied around their necks and then were driven out into the countryside, miles away from their homes and let go. They all made it home within 24 hours. Ultimately the scheme was abandoned as it was easier to deliver the mail yourself than rely on a cat!

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't "warp speed" imply "bending space" such that your spaceship isn't traveling at/near the speed of light, but merely traversing great distances much quicker because your "warp drive" has caused the space between them to somehow contract? As if there were ripples in a once straight line and you can jump between the ripples instead of having to travel along the line? So you can get places as if you were moving much faster than light speed, even though you aren't.

It's actually based on, well not in TOS, but on real theory in later series Michel Alcubierre worked somewhat on the theory of warp drive. In essence, in star trek, you bend space around the ship. Of course, the energy expenditure would be enourmous, which in Star Trek required anti matter and dilithium crystals. In actuality...no clue lol. But it's a fun concept if it would be possible.
They never solved the problem with short distances, though. Say you "warped" at warp 9, over a short distance, say 5 kilometers, you would technically arrive before you left five kilometers before, because you're traveling faster than the speed of light.
