It was obviously an attempt to engage him in conversation to get him to fork out money for whatever she was selling. They’re not actually interested in him, just his money. I say this because it happens all the time. I’ve had them simply smile big and say hi only, so as soon as you reply with hi and a smile yourself, they start to reel you in. Totally disingenuous.

why do you need a passport anyway? it's not like you're travelling out of the country. I'd still like to know what country you're in, why be secretive about it?

You need s passport for everything like renting a room, going to a shelter, opening a bank account and so on. You can't do anything without a passport. I saved money for a room to survive Christmas and New Year's Eve, now I don't have this option anymore.
