How much income does a 45 -- 50 yo man need to live alone?

As a severely disabled person living with my parents I get $300/month allowance and I got a one time premium of $1000. But I do not know how to live alone and where to earn money.

Probably $1500/mo minimum if you want to live like a normal person and if you don't plan on having a roommate. You can live on less, but it's a struggle.

There are autism resources in the USA, all you have to do is google "autism resources" and you will find a lot of help. You could try Autism Speaks or your local Autism resources.

Also, I would check into income based living, as it will be cheaper. As far as how much you need, it entirely depends on where you live and how much the cost of living is.

Thanks -- that is $18K/y after taxes. How much is it before taxes?

I already have some local autism resources -- will contact them. There are two problems:

1) I feel hopeless
2) I may not be permitted to contact some resources.

Why wouldn't you be allowed to contact them? If you are on the autism spectrum, they are there to help you.

I am not sure that my parents want me to be independent -- but if I am not allowed I will contact them secretly. Not that difficult.

The 18k was before taxes.

You could do the income based renting and food stamp route and try to live off of that with your disability but that's probably going to be hell. I had no job and no income for a few months last year and I had to go that kind of route. I don't think I could live that way for an extended period of time. The stress is just way too high when you're worried about money all the time. Two years ago my gross income was only like 9k. That was while sharing rent with a housemate. That was a really bad year for my mental health.

Can you tell me more about it?

I live a relatively comfortable life with my parents, but I do not make decisions for myself.

-- I am not free to meet certain people
-- I am not free to go back to the University
-- I am not free to increase my dose of antidepressant

It will be a struggle. Living on your own will give you some freedoms but only if you can afford it. Having money is what really gives you freedom and options. Unless you have some way of making a good amount of money, you will probably be better off staying home.

While you don't have to struggle as much now, it might be a good idea to try to find a way to use your skills to build an income online. It takes time to build something up but you've got nothing but time right now. Might as well put it to good use. If you move out, you won't have that luxury.

When I had no real job I did random online jobs for different sites. I started out spamming tasks on Mturk for like $5/hr or something pathetic like that. But it's something when you don't have a job.

Then I started getting into the search engine analysis type jobs. There are three main companies that do that and they pay you $12/hr but they will only let you work on those projects for a year and you have to take some difficult tests and do the training to get it. One of the companies was Appen Butler Hill.

When I was doing the search engine stuff I noticed that Appen had qualifications for transcription and English comprehension so I took those. Ever since then I get an email every few weeks or so about a new transcription project that they need done. The pay for these are usually $9-12/hr for a few weeks/months until the project is over. You can work as many hours as you want while the project is open. There's no limit really. The projects can be kind of interesting. This isn't the only company that does this stuff and you just kinda have to grind/luck into it. It's nothing guaranteed but it's not bad for an income on the side. When you're desperate, you'll take anything you can.

The last project I did involved correcting the automated transcriptions that are made when people ask Siri for something on their iphone. I'm guessing it was used to help train the voice recognition. I found a job half way through that project so I havn't messed around with them since then. I still get emails about new projects every few weeks though.

Sad but true -- my life is much better than that of a homeless person.

WOW! Can you please elaborate?

Sorry I edited my last post after you read it and I elaborated on what I did when I was broke and jobless. You'll have to go back and read it.

Thank you very much! Do you think a degree in Mathematics may help. How can I contact them?

I don't have a degree. They really don't care about what your qualifications are. They will give you their test. If you pass enough of their qualifications then more jobs will potentially open up to you. There aren't any guarantees though and it's not instant.

The site for that specific company is appen.com. http://www.jobs.net/jobs/appen/en-us/

You can search what they have available too. http://www.appen.com/company/opportunities/

Don't pay attention to the country much. They pay in Australian dollars to your Paypal account and Paypal coverts it to whatever currency you use. It takes awhile before you get your first payment though.

There are a lot of similar places to find work out there but I don't remember most of them off hand. You just have to Google around a bit to find what you're looking for. Either way it's best not to think about it as a job. It's just something to do while you work on getting a real job.
