The "Following"

So I've never really understood how "following" works. I follow a few people, but how does that benefit me? What does it achieve? How do I actually make use of it?

If you go into your news feed, you can essentially stalk everyone you are following. It will show you literally everything they have done. That's it. It's just to stalk people. lol (at least as far as I've seen, anyway)

It makes it easier to see their threads, posts, and to contact them easier. Only certain people allow others to view their profiles. Like me. I'm completely private unless you're following me. I don't let everyone see everything about my profile. It's kind of like Fb. Private profile vs. public.

That’s not correct. If I follow you here, I still can’t see your profile.

No, I have it limited to who can see what. So, if you click my profile and you're not following me, you can't see anything. The only thing you can do is send me a direct message and come on the actual threads and posts to see what I've posted or responded with, but you can't go to my direct page and look at my threads, posts, or following.

But I did click to follow you and STILL couldn't see anything. The only value following has is when you go to your own profile and click "news feed", that's when you see what the people you follow do.

If you have it set that way, YOU have to follow someone for them to be able to see your profile. Doesn't matter what other people do. You can have everyone who comes to the site, members, people you follow or nobody.

I personally think it would just be easier to not put something you don't want the whole world to know on your profile, but that's just me.

Also, it wouldn't make sense that way if you think about it logically. Say if YOU want to limit who can see your profile and who can't, then YOU need to be in control of that function. If everybody could just circumvent it by following you, and suddenly they can see your entire profile, then the control is in literally everybody else's hands and not yours.

You didn't click anything to follow me, because it gives me a notification that you are, and you're not even on my followers list, lol. You have to go through your profile settings to switch your privacy for certain people to see certain things. I have it totally private, so only the forum members can send me messages, but you have to be a follower of mine to see everything else. Basically, you can't see anything on my profile unless you actually hit the follow button. So, that's why you don't see anything, because you're not following me. You have to go to my profile, hit follow, and refresh your page. Then, you'll see my profile.

Not necessarily. He can't see anything until he follows me. The only thing he's allowed to do is send me a private message for now. Otherwise, once he follows me, he has full access. I can see everything he does, because he's public. I just recently started following him this morning, but I can still see whatever he does, because he has a public page. For me, he has to follow me to see anything.

I bet you can see my entire profile now that you're following me. I'm also following you too, but you can see everything now vs. previous.

@HellsLittleAngel and @TheRealCallie ok, first of all i did hit follow and tried looking at her profile and when i saw nothing i unfollowed (because I thought it was pointless) BUT, i hadn't hit refresh, which when I tried it all again DID work. So @HellsLittleAngel is actually correct. I've now unfollowed because i don't see the point lol

You're a bit dramatic. You only follow people if you wish to see their profiles and engage. If you don't want to see my profile, then yes, there's no point. It wouldn't matter if I followed or unfollowed you as I can see everything since you have a public profile for the entire forum to see, which I don't. You've now been unfollowed as well.

I was just responding to your initial post about how "following" works, but you seem to be quite involved with it, lol. But, I don't even know why you have followers since you have a public profile. Nobody would even need to follow you, lol. They're obviously clueless, lol. Oh...and I'm definitely a little angel from hell...

It is for those to follow you, but not the other way around. For those who have private profiles and you want to see their profiles, you'd have to follow them, unless you just don't care, then nothing matters.
